Interview with Paul Fig

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both analog and digital have unique advantages, and I believe in using the best of each to serve the music. Analog gear brings a warmth, depth, and subtle color that can enhance a track’s character, especially during mix time. The tactile nature of analog gear allows for creative spontaneity and sonic richness that's hard to replicate. Digital, on the other hand, offers precision, recall, and flexibility, which are essential in today’s fast-paced workflows. My hybrid setup combines the best of both worlds—digital for control and consistency, analog for that irreplaceable, natural feel. This approach allows me to sculpt sounds with depth and precision, delivering mixes that feel both polished and organic.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love the collaboration in bringing a client’s vision to life. It's rewarding to shape ideas into something real, working hard on every detail to achieve a shared goal. There’s nothing like hearing the final track, knowing it reflects everyone’s passion and dedication

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I began my career as a musician, inspired by Van Halen to pick up the guitar. As a teenager, I played in local bands and went on to study music at Pasadena City College and the Dick Grove School of Music. In 1994, I became a founding member of the punk band Amen, which eventually led me to join Bluebird. Touring with these bands gave me a deep understanding of the challenges and creative needs that artists experience, which has shaped my approach in the studio. My fascination with the recording process led me to Sound City Studios in 2001, where I fully immersed myself in engineering and production. There, I had the opportunity to work alongside top producers like Joe Barresi, Dave Bianco, George Drakoulias, Nick Raskulinecz, Matt Wallace, and Greg Fidelman. Since then, I’ve spent over two decades producing, mixing, and engineering, helping artists capture and shape their sound in ways that bring their vision to life.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: My studio setup is centered around an Avid HDX system with 48 I/O on a comprehensive patch bay, featuring over 60 mic pres, 29 compressors, high-quality EQs, and a top-notch selection of microphones. For live tracking, I’m equipped to accommodate isolated drums, bass, electric guitar, piano, and vocals. My home mix setup mirrors the studio with an Avid HDX system, 48 I/O, and a hybrid approach that brings in 40 channels of analog at mix time for a full, versatile sound

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: The most common work I do for my clients is full-scale production, mixing, and engineering. I oversee the entire recording process, from capturing raw sound to delivering a polished final mix. My role includes not only technical setup and sound quality but also guiding artists creatively to get the best out of their music, creating an environment where they feel free to explore and push their sound to new levels.
