Interview with Emmanuel Miro
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I consider it essential, at the initial stage, to establish a dialogue with the client to fully understand their expectations and desires regarding the project, as well as their preferred development methods. I am open to continuous communication and feedback throughout the work process. If the client wishes, we can arrange real-time meetings, via video calls or messages, to actively collaborate on the project development. It is important to note that special requirements may incur additional costs, but I am available to discuss these. Subsequently, we move into the production phase, where I focus on researching and creating the requested track, including my arrangements. During this phase, continuous feedback is possible, allowing for active collaboration. Once the piece has been arranged to the client's satisfaction, I proceed with mixing and sound optimization, which I carry out in my studio in an environment free from external interference. At the end of the mixing process, the client will receive the mix and will have the opportunity to request any corrections or adjustments. Finally, I will move on to mastering the track, preparing the finished product for delivery, with the possibility of making further revisions even on the master.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that creating high-quality music or sound design is a quick and easy process. Many people believe that it can be done in just a few hours or days, but in reality, it requires significant time, effort, and attention to detail. The creative process involves not only composing and arranging the music but also revising and refining it to ensure it meets the client’s vision and standards. This often includes multiple iterations, feedback sessions, and careful adjustments to achieve the best possible result. Additionally, the final price of a project is often misunderstood. Once a price is established for a job, it needs to be respected. I am very open to negotiating different prices for different projects, but there must be clarity from the beginning, throughout the entire process, until the end of the work. Ultimately, good music is crafted with patience and dedication, and rushing the process can compromise the quality of the final product. It's essential for clients to understand that taking the time to get it right is crucial for a successful outcome.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When working with prospective clients, I typically ask several key questions to ensure a clear understanding of their needs and expectations. Here are some examples: 1. **What is your vision for this project?** – I want to understand your overall goals and what you hope to achieve with the music. 2. **What style or genre of music are you looking for?** – This helps me align my approach with your preferences. 3. **Are there any specific themes or messages you want to convey?** – Knowing the emotional or conceptual focus can guide the creative process. 4. **What is your target audience?** – Understanding who you want to reach can influence the musical choices. 5. **Do you have any reference tracks or inspirations?** – This gives me a sense of your taste and what resonates with you. 6. **What is your timeline for this project?** – It’s essential for the client to understand that a good production and successful project take time. It’s unrealistic to expect a quality product in a short timeframe, such as two or three days. I always ask clients to have the patience to wait for the work to be done with the care and attention it requires. 7. **What is your budget?** – This allows me to tailor my services to meet your financial expectations. 8. **How do you prefer to communicate during the project?** – Establishing clear communication channels is crucial for collaboration. These questions help me to create a tailored experience that meets the client's needs and ensures a successful outcome.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If you are looking to hire a provider like me, I recommend starting by clearly defining your vision and goals for the project. Having a clear understanding of what you want to achieve will help both you and the provider align expectations. Be open about your preferences, inspirations, and any specific elements that are important to you. Additionally, it’s helpful to review the provider’s previous work to get a sense of their style and capabilities. Look for someone whose sound resonates with you and who demonstrates a commitment to quality and creativity. Communication is key, so choose a provider who values collaboration and is willing to listen to your ideas and feedback. A strong working relationship can lead to more successful outcomes, as it fosters an environment where creativity can thrive. Finally, trust your instincts. If you feel a connection with the provider and believe in their vision, you are likely to achieve something great together.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to deliver music that not only meets their expectations but also resonates on an emotional level. I commit to understanding their vision and bringing it to life with attention to detail and a deep passion for music. I strive to create an authentic sound that captures their unique essence while ensuring a high-quality production. I also promise to maintain open communication throughout the process, providing updates and being receptive to feedback. My goal is to foster a collaborative environment where their ideas are valued, and together we can create something truly special. Ultimately, I aim to deliver a final product that evokes emotion and leaves a lasting impression.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: When I approach a song, what I bring with me is primarily a deep sense of emotion. For me, music is a feeling, a vibration that can make the heart beat faster. Since I was a child, techno has had a huge impact on me, conveying emotions that I strive to replicate in my creations. In my work process, I aim to create an emotional experience for both myself and the listener. Each track is a journey, and I pay close attention to details because I believe those particulars make the difference. My intention is to connect with those who listen to my music, conveying the same emotions I felt during the creation. Essentially, what I bring to a song is my quest for authenticity and the desire to evoke feelings, creating a deep bond between the music and the listener.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I found myself on a desert island, I would definitely hope there was electricity, otherwise it would be a bit impossible to produce music unless I started banging sticks on coconuts! Jokes aside, I would say that the computer would be essential for using my Cubase. It's a music production software I've known for about 20 years, if not more, and I can use it with my eyes closed. Additionally, choosing the Pro-Q3 by FabFilter as my main working tool would be an obvious choice. It’s a high-quality digital equalizer that allows me to sculpt my sounds as I prefer. This isn't a commercial for the plugin, but I find it particularly suited to my tastes and, in fact, one of the best in its category. To complete my setup, I would bring along a nice synthesizer, such as Serum, as it’s a modern synthesizer that gives me the chance to start with totally new sounds. I know a bit about synthesis and can use an enormous amount of very nice presets. It's an extremely versatile synthesizer that sounds really good. Finally, I certainly can't do without my TB-303, an icon of techno. The typical sound of the 303 has characterized the genre and would be indispensable in my setup. As a fifth element, I would bring the UAD plugin series from Universal Audio. These plugins are the crown jewel of any producer's studio because they are complete and sound really, really good.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: My choice is fundamentally more oriented towards digital, while having some elements of analog hardware in my setup. There are several reasons for this preference. First of all, in the modern era, digital allows for excellent results, offering greater control over what you are doing and speeding up the workflow. In a studio that cannot be too large, it is advantageous to use a completely digital setup. In fact, my workflow is entirely "in the box," which allows me to easily recall various setups and presets based on the client's tastes. This enables me to replicate characteristic sounds later on. Additionally, my work as a producer focuses mainly on techno and electronic music, genres primarily destined for festivals and clubs. I do not need to have more analog coloration, like that which might be required in a studio where real instruments such as guitars and basses are recorded, or any other instruments that may require more analog warmth. Therefore, I would say this is another reason why I prefer to have a more digital workflow.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a creatively stimulating environment where I seek to blend technology and art. I use Cubase as my main DAW, which allows me to manage my productions smoothly and intuitively. I have a high-quality RME audio interface to ensure optimal recording and playback. For precise listening during production and mastering, I use IK Multimedia MTM ILoud speakers as my starting point. The Mackie HR824, being more powerful, provide me with a clearer view of how tracks sound at high volumes. Additionally, I have a high-quality set of headphones, including the Ollo SX4, which are very critical and allow me to achieve sound accuracy, helping me identify and surgically correct any issues. The plugins I use most frequently include the UAD Spark series, but I also have a wide range of other plugins, including those from the FabFilter series. Among my favorite synthesizers, I would place Serum at the top, and I also have a good hardware setup that includes analog synthesizers like the Roland TB303 and the Access Virus TI, along with several modules for a more versatile production experience. My studio is a comfortable place where I enjoy listening, modifying sounds, and taking care of every aspect of my productions. I pay a lot of attention to the working environment, and I'm confident I can achieve excellent results without relying on others.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: In my musical journey, I have been greatly influenced by past artists such as Carl Cox, Mauro Picotto, and Marco Carola. These figures have left a significant mark on my development. Currently, I really enjoy producers like Enrico Sangiuliano and DJs such as Charlotte de Witte and Nico Moreno. These artists are introducing me to new sounds that I try to incorporate into my productions, blending them with my memories and feelings from the '90s. Being someone who lived through that era vividly and actively, I feel a strong connection to the techno music of those years. My goal is to offer my services in the best possible way, creating a bridge between the past and the present.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My work primarily focuses on producing high-energy techno tracks. I collaborate closely with artists to understand their needs and capture their unique vision. I specialize in creating deep and immersive atmospheres, and my main goal is to ensure the utmost client satisfaction. I am always available for chats and meetings, attentively listening to requests and offering personalized advice to bring the desired project to life.
