Interview with Francesco Cremonesi
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: As much as I would love to have a studio full of analog gear, mixing all in the box is way much easier. Still musical instruments are way better than VSTs and samples.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Sharing the passion for music with people who approach it differently, be they artists, producers or other engineers. There's always something to learn.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Once the job is done, if the client is happy with my work the only thing I ask them is a positive feedback on social media (word of mouth can be very helpful to us engineers) and to credit me on the streaming platforms (such as Apple Music or Tidal)
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: A technically competent mixing engineer is very good, but a technically competent mixing engineer who truly believes in your music is way better. Avoid someone who consider your song nothing other than their next paycheck.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a sound engineers for 4 years know
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mostly work on Hip-Hop, R&B and Pop, but I have experience with other genres, such as Rock, Indie & Folk.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Balance and transient design
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My goal is to give your song definition, dynamics and taste, taking care to respect and preserve the artist's original vision
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Once the artist and I have reached an agreement on all the work that needs to be done (no bad surprises and no added fees once the job is done), I like to have a short discussion with the artist musical taste and inspiration, in order to get a grasp of his artistic vision and to find the right references. Once I start to job, I usually send to the artist a pre-mix (which absolutely won't count as a revision), so he can make sure the work is going accordingly to his expectation. To me, a perfectly crafted mix is as important as the client's satisfaction.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I mostly mix and master ITB, using mostly UAD, FabFilter, SoundToys, Slate Digital (& more) plugins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: If I had to choose 3 mixing engineers I would definitly go with Serban Ghenea, Tom Elmhirst and Jaycen Joshua
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I work as a mixing and mastering engineer.
