Spencer is an excellent musician and trusted collaborator. His ability to pick up charts quickly and understand broad ideas is something I always look forward to when we record together. Additionally, Spencer is a fantastic and tasteful improviser. Above all, he brings an easy-going but professional attitude to each recording session. He's my first call for all things saxophone and clarinet.

Interview with Spencer Danielson

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: Improvisation is my superpower. I earned my master’s in clarinet performance, and the clarinet is where I really shine. Not just in the classical world, but across jazz, soundtracks, and beyond. I love pushing the clarinet into spaces it doesn’t usually go, bringing a wide range of styles and colors that make it stand out in fresh, unexpected ways.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: I bring a mix of style, professionalism, and creativity. Whether the part calls for faithful interpretation or fresh improvisation, I know how to shape the music so it feels alive and expressive. My goal is always to elevate the track, to add color, energy, and nuance that makes the listener lean in and feel something

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: I always start by really listening, not just to the notes, but to the mood, groove, and style of the track. Once I’ve locked into that vibe, I’ll lay down multiple takes (usually three or four), experimenting with different phrasing, tone colors, and energy levels. That way, you get options, whether you want something subtle and supportive, or bold and spotlight grabbing. My goal is always to give you performances that feel inspired and sit naturally inside your track.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I keep it clean and efficient: a solid condenser mic and Focusrite interface that give me warm, clear recordings without distractions. Nothing flashy, just a reliable setup that lets my playing shine

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Cannonball Adderley is my North Star, the way he poured joy and soul into every note of Work Song still knocks me out. On the clarinet side, Eddie Daniels is a huge inspiration. Jazz clarinet doesn’t always get the spotlight, but hearing him reminds me how much character and fire the instrument can bring.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: Improvisation is my sweet spot. Whether it’s a smoky jazz solo, a soaring classical line, or something cinematic for soundtracks, I love creating music in the moment. My strength is shaping melodies that feel alive and spontaneous, while still fitting seamlessly into the project.
