Interview with Nathan McNeill
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Brandon Lucas. He is a phenomenal recording engineer who has guided me through hundreds if not thousands of vocal takes. He's humble, and has a great ear for nuances in the vocal performance.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Commitment to helping you release the sound or concept that is inside of you.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to know people from all walks of life, and the mystery of where all music comes from. I have an innate ability to hear things in my head, but I have no idea where they come from! Being able to replicate those sounds into the physical realm has taken years of practice and falling short, but when I get it right, nothing beats that feeling.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Are there really lions freely roaming the streets in Africa? My answer is yes! We carry around a stick to fend them off because we dont have cars.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Dont overthink it.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Get to know the client. Understand what they are looking to achieve. Communicate how I fit in to that picture. Get on with creating something special.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. In the best case scenario, what does success look like for this project? 2. In the bigger picture, what are your aiming to achieve? 3. How would you like me to help?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Come with an open mind, and believe in yourself. I am not here to help you sound like someone else! I'm all for inspiration, but there is something far more valuable in you being you and showcasing that to the world.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A guitar and 4 sets of strings! That adds up to 5 right?
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Bach, Beethoven, Felix Mendelsohn
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Taking a voice memo recorded on a phone and turning it into a full production.
