Interview with Hizi-Ezer

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: There are many projects I’ve worked on for others that I’m proud of, but I would say my own solo work from 2018 - 2019 stands out the most. These projects, which I released during that time, created timeless vibes that resonated with listeners for years. They not only received positive feedback but also garnered millions of streams and engagement, which is a huge achievement for me. What makes this moment even more special is that it was during a period when I felt at my highest peak spiritually, mentally, and physically. The connection between my well-being and my creative output at the time is something I’ll always cherish, and it’s a period that will forever be a proud milestone in my music career.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I’m experimenting with a new genre that blends elements of hip hop, R&B, Afro music, and other global influences. It’s an exciting journey as I’m pushing creative boundaries to craft something truly unique. I’m also collaborating with various artists, both established and emerging, especially from the UK and Africa. My goal is to grow this new sound with them and hopefully see it make waves on the Billboard charts, as I believe it’s all part of God’s plan. Stay tuned. you’ll be hearing it soon!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: When it comes to programming and routing, I prefer digital because it offers flexibility and efficiency in the production process. But when it comes to sound design and recording external sounds, I lean towards analog. Analog gear provides that genuine warmth and timeless vibe that’s hard to replicate, even though some plugins do a great job emulating it. There’s just something about using analog equipment, especially when collaborating with other musicians, that feels more authentic and brings a special touch to the music. Nothing quite matches the richness and depth it adds to a track.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise to my clients is to fully commit to understanding their vision and bringing it to life with passion and dedication. I guarantee that I will put in the time and effort needed to create high-quality music that resonates with them and their audience. I will communicate openly throughout the process, ensuring that we’re always on the same page and making adjustments as needed. Ultimately, my goal is to make music that we can both be proud of, and to foster a collaborative environment where creativity can thrive. Your success is my success, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What I like most about my job is that it allows me to truly be myself, as if I was born for this. I’ve never felt prouder than when I’m on my laptop, working hard to create something special that will resonate for many years to come. Ever since I was young, I’ve had a deep love for music, and I never considered doing anything other than becoming a great beatmaker and producer. It’s fulfilling to know that I’m pursuing my passion and making a positive impact through my music.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Customers often ask me questions like, "What DAW do you use?" or "Do you know how to use this particular software or plugin?" My response is usually to share that I primarily work with FL Studio for making beats, while I use Pro Tools for recording vocals and mixing. I’m also familiar with a variety of other software and plugins, so I always encourage clients to ask about any specific tools they’re interested in. I’m happy to help them understand how we can integrate those into our work together. It’s all about finding the right fit for their project!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that music production is easy or doesn’t require much effort beyond pushing a few buttons. In reality, it takes a lot of creativity, technical skill, and attention to detail to create music that resonates with listeners. In East African Countries where i grew up like Rwanda, music wasn’t always regarded as a serious or profitable career path. Early on, many people saw it as a hobby or something that couldn’t provide a sustainable income. However, this perception has shifted rapidly in recent years. Today, music has become one of the most respected and well-paying professions within the society. With the growth of the local music scene, increased access to technology, and more recognition for East African talent globally, artists and producers are now seen as important contributors to culture and the economy. This transformation shows how far the industry has come and how important music is becoming within our communities.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: When working with prospective clients, I ask a few key questions to ensure we’re aligned and can create the best possible outcome together: - **What’s your vision for the project?** – Understanding your creative direction is essential. - **What mood or vibe are you going for?** – This helps me tailor the music to match the emotion you want to convey. - **Who are your musical influences or reference tracks?** – This gives insight into the sound and style you’re aiming for. - **Do you have a specific deadline or timeline?** – Knowing this helps plan the project and meet your expectations. - **What’s your target audience or market?** – This helps shape the production to appeal to your listeners. These questions typically come up with returning or ongoing clients because I aim to build a strong connection over time. However, with first-time clients, I tend to ask fewer questions initially. Instead, I focus on hearing their thoughts and understanding their natural workflow before guiding them through the process. This way, we can build trust and a solid working relationship from the start.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: My advice for a customer looking to hire a provider like me is to find someone who genuinely cares about your project and puts their heart into the work. Look for a producer who is passionate about creating something that not only meets your vision but also makes them proud—someone who will go the extra mile to ensure the final product is top quality. You want to work with someone who isn’t just in it for the money but who truly values the music and is even willing to help promote it and push it further. Collaboration and dedication make all the difference!

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: If I were on a desert island and could only take 5 pieces of gear, the first thing I’d bring is a high-performing laptop to handle all my production needs. Next, I’d make sure to have a StarLink Internet connection so I can stay connected and collaborate from anywhere. I’d also bring my Audio Technica M40x or M50x headphones for precise sound monitoring, along with a Scarlett or ISA One interface for high-quality recordings. Lastly, I’d pack my JBL MkII 5 speakers to ensure I have excellent playback and mixing capabilities. With these essentials, I could still create and produce wherever I am!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started learning music production on FL Studio in late 2014 when I was 16, but I stopped at the end of that same year. However, I was first introduced to FL Studio back in 2011 when I was 13, though I didn’t get the chance to fully explore it until 2016. Since 2016, I’ve never looked back because I genuinely love creating music. It feels like I’m on a journey to make a significant impact in the music world. I’m not exactly sure how yet, but I can always feel that it’s in the making.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I would describe my style as a fusion of timeless, vibey beats with modern elements. I draw inspiration from hip hop, R&B, Afro music, and global sounds, blending them to create something fresh yet familiar. My production is emotional and atmospheric, with an emphasis on creating a vibe that connects with the listener on a deeper level. I also love to experiment and push boundaries, combining unexpected elements to craft unique sounds that stand out. It’s all about making music that feels natural, yet innovative, and has the potential to resonate long after it's heard.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with Memphis rappers like Yo Gotti, Moneybagg Yo, Finesse2Tymes, GloRilla, and also artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B. Their energy and unique style in hip hop align with the type of beats I produce, and I feel like we could create something powerful together. On the R&B side, I’m drawn to working with artists like Jorja Smith, Shiv, Nao, Mary J. Blige, and SZA because they bring so much soul and emotion into their music, which resonates with my production style. In pop, collaborating with Stromae would be amazing because of his genre-bending approach. I'm also keen on working with many unknown UK and African rappers as I’m currently experimenting with a new genre. It’s coming together nicely, and I believe it’s the kind of sound that could make waves on the Billboard charts—by God's plan.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: One essential music production tip is to always back up your newly completed project files, whether to internet storage, like a cloud service, or an external hard drive. This ensures that your hard work is safe and accessible, even if something goes wrong with your primary system. Additionally, during a session, make it a habit to frequently save your work by using the shortcut Ctrl + S. It’s a simple yet effective way to prevent losing progress and maintain a smooth workflow.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on hip hop, R&B, and Afro-inspired music. These genres allow me to blend rhythmic patterns, soulful melodies, and modern sounds to create beats that are vibey and timeless. However, I don’t limit myself to just those styles. I often push boundaries and experiment with different sounds, combining influences from various genres to create something completely new and unexpected. This approach helps me keep my music fresh and innovative.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is my ability to create beats that are not only sonically rich but also emotionally resonant. I have a deep understanding of how to blend various musical influences—from Afrobeat and hip-hop to soul and R&B—into a cohesive sound that feels both fresh and timeless. I excel at capturing the right vibe and energy for any project, ensuring that the production enhances the artist's message while keeping the listener engaged. Additionally, my ear for detail allows me to fine-tune every element of a track, from the arrangement to the mix, ensuring it sounds professional and ready for release. This versatility and attention to emotional impact are what set my work apart.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: What I bring to a song is a unique blend of vibe, emotion, and timelessness. I focus on crafting beats that not only complement an artist's style but also elevate the overall feel of the track. My approach is to ensure that the music tells a story, creating a deep connection between the sound and the listener. I pay close attention to detail, adding subtle touches that make the production stand out while allowing the artist's voice and message to shine. My global taste in music, ranging from West African rhythms to classic soul and hip-hop, allows me to infuse different cultural elements into a track, making it both modern and universal. Whether it’s a catchy hook or a deep, atmospheric beat, I make sure the song has longevity and impact.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: My typical work process in beat making and music production is centered around creating an organic, vibe-driven flow. I usually start by setting the mood—whether it's through melodies or rhythmic patterns. I let inspiration guide me, often experimenting with different sounds and samples to capture the emotion I want the beat to evoke. Once the foundation is set, I layer in drums and bass to give it that punch. When recording or producing for an artist, I focus on the collaboration aspect. I ensure that the artist's vision and energy are captured in the session, whether that means adjusting the beat, refining the arrangement, or adding elements that enhance their performance. Throughout the process, I maintain a relaxed, creative atmosphere so that the music feels natural and timeless.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My studio setup is quite minimalistic because I believe simplicity allows creativity to flow. I work best in a spacious environment with plenty of natural sunlight—it helps set the right vibe for the day. As far as equipment goes, I keep it simple: a good set of speakers and a reliable laptop are all I need to get started. The most important elements for me are positive energy and good vibes. If any additional equipment is necessary, I’ll get it, but I prefer to let the music lead rather than relying on a complex setup.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: There are a lot of musicians and producers who inspire me, as I have a broad taste in music and listen to sounds from all over the world. I’m especially drawn to old songs from the 80s and 90s, particularly from Senegal, Mali, the USA, and other regions. For example, Youssou N'Dour, a legend from Senegal, has had a huge influence on me with his unique blend of mbalax and pop. Other musicians from West Africa, like Salif Keita from Mali, have also shaped my approach to production with their mastery of blending traditional African music with modern sounds. From the USA, artists like Stevie Wonder and Prince from the 80s and 90s era are incredibly influential, and their timeless music constantly reminds me of the power of creativity. When it comes to producers and musicians from earlier decades, like the 60s and 70s, I admire the work of French artists and producers such as Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy, who left a mark on both French pop and international music. From the early 2000s, French producers like Daft Punk and David Guetta helped define modern music, which also has a significant influence on my beats. These are just a few of the many artists who inspire me, but they all share a common thread of creating timeless, genre-defying music that continues to resonate globally.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: The most common type of work I do for my clients involves creating timeless, vibey beats that have a modern, polished sound, making them Billboard-ready. My style draws from a blend of genres, with a strong influence from hip-hop, soul, R&B, and Afro-inspired rhythms. I focus on crafting instrumentals that evoke emotion, remain memorable, and feel fresh, ensuring they can stand out in any project, whether it's a single, EP, or album. My aim is to help artists and collaborators elevate their music by providing production that sounds professional and radio-ready.
