Interview with Josh J.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on my own music with some songwriter friends, as well as some sample packs that will be out soon.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I used to be all for analog but these days I've come to love both. They both have their ways.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To give it my all and treat it as if the song would have my name on it in front of the whole world.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to express myself through sound and collaborating others with the same passion.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What do you need from me? Just a WAV of the song you want guitar on, if you have a placeholder guitar that you want me to replace, you can send that too seperately. I'll do the rest.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I just play guitar. Well, I do but it's deeper than that.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What kind of vibe are you going for? Do you have an idea in mind or do you want me to do my own thing to inspire you?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Trust.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My guitar, Macbook, headphones, interface and what else?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I moved to Los Angeles at 18, met some friends that were producers and helped me grow and learn. Eventually found myself on the road and in the studio with artists I used to look up to.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Soulful, emotional, unique.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Prince will always be the answer.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Simple is the way. Less really is more.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, R&B, EDM, Rock, Hip Hop. I would love to do some country as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My ear, feel, and improvisation is my strongest skill. Such as melodies, progressions, and tone.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring originality, passion, creativity, and my own sound that cannot be replicated.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I receive a track from a client, I like to press record and do a first time blind pass of just jamming out. Most musicians will tell you that a lot of the magic comes from the first take. Once I get an idea of what is needed, or if I was given a specific direction, I'll track my guitars in layers with panning, processing, until I am completely satisfied before presenting it to my clients.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My home studio consists of all kinds of guitars and amps. I work exclusively on Ableton Live and like to listen through my Yamaha HS8s for mixing. Most of the time I am tracking with my Kemper Profiling Amp into UAD Preamps. I just prefer the sound and workflow I've developed. I definitely have a unique sound.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I started playing guitar when I was a kid because of Guns N' Roses. I was really big into rock and metal bands then started getting into 2000s emo and alt music. Eventually I fell in love with rnb, indie pop, and dance music. These days I love all music but I prefer listening to music with real instruments especially guitars. Some of my biggest influences for guitar are Jeff Beck, Prince, Slash, John Frusciante, and other greats.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I record high quality guitars and process them in my home studio for tracks or ideas.
