Guitarist and More

Tim Cole on SoundBetter

I have been playing guitar, bass, mandolin, lap steel, and banjo professionally in and around CT since I was 11. Since then (about 9 years) I have played about 200 live gigs and more recently have been working to focus on session work.

My name is Tim Cole. I would love to help add some guitar, mandolin, steel guitar, bass or clawhammer banjo to your project! I have been playing professionally for about 9 years, since I was 11. I have been onstage with some acts like The Kennedy's, Mark Cosgrove, and Brooks Williams, as well as having extensive playing and engineering experience in studio environments.
While the guitar is my longest tenured instrument I also have been playing mandolin and lap steel for nearly as long. I worked with a great luthier, Chris Fouke to come up with a custom lap steel that incorporates two Certano string benders that are designed to emulate the sound of a pedal steel. This gives me access to all the classic country pedal steel licks and textures while always having the option to add in a more raw bluesy lap steel sound.
I have a passion for improvisation and adding unique colors and textures to a mix. Some of my influences on guitar include Jerry Garcia, Kieth Richards, Eric Clapton, Julian Lage, John Scofield, Billy Strings, Derek Trucks, Trey Anastasio, and Tony Rice. My mandolin playing draws equally from classic bluegrass, folk, Irish, and jazz.

Interview with Tim Cole

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: I would describe my style as clean and spacious in the style of Jerry Garcia but with an edge nastiness by way of Kieth Richards and Duane Allman.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I would say that the type of music I work the most on is folk-influenced rock and roll, but I also have a lot of experience with country, jazz, blues, heavier rock, reggae and more.

  5. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  6. A: The most common type of work I do for clients is to add a new unique texture to their song to help bring put more life and color.
