Interview with David Schuler

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Of course I'm very proud of the big records I've made with bigger artists, but it's the smaller, more developmental-level artists that I am most proud to collaborate with. I love nothing more than being a part of someone's journey at an early stage.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Finishing my 3rd album for my solo project, "The Bad Dreamers".

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't think so!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: tomato/tomatoe!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'll work my ass off until you're happy but I pride myself on fast, efficient turnarounds. And I won't commit unless I'm certain that I am a match.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The people.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "What's your rate?" is the most common question. This is impossible to answer because everyone's financial situation is different, which means everyone's budget is different. All I ask is for full transparency with regard to what that looks like and I can assure you that I'll never take advantage or ask for more than I'm worth.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Not sure I know what this one means!

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I'm much more interested in having a conversation to get to know the person before the artist. Our life informs our art.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't be afraid to ask questions - no question is silly or un-important.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: None. It haunts me lol.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I grew up playing in bands and touring through most of my 20's and began writing and producing for other artists at the age of 28. I'm 42 now and have been working as a producer and songwriter ever since.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Brutally honest storytelling as a lyricist. Darker pop music from a production standpoint.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I've never really had a dream collaborator! Call me weird. haha.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't overthink! Get the song written first, add the bells and whistles once you have a song that stands on it's own with no fancy production tricks.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, Alt-Pop, Indie Pop and Synthwave.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Lyric and Production

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: My absolute best and my absolute worst! Anyone who claims they know "how to write a hit" or "how to blow an artist up" is full of BS. I don't think any one person has a cheat code or a handbook for how to make a project successful; all I can do is facilitate a creative process that allows an artist to take risks and chances. If the music is coming from the right place and being made for the right reasons, there's no such thing as failing.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: As either a producer or a co-writer, it all begins with a thorough conversation to first ensure that I'm a fit for what the artist needs. From that point forward, the real work begins through a process of discovery with the artist. Even though I have tons of experience at all levels, every new project is a first-time for me which is what makes the process of collaboration so exciting.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a home studio setup with all of the usual gear suspects, plus some toys! Various synthesizers, guitars, piano, all rigged and going into a very capable, custom spec'd iMac with tons of firepower for any audio needs.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Very inspired by artists like Duran Duran, David Bowie, NIN and a lot of Kanye's music from 2006-2014.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I'm typically brought in as a producer and songwriter for the vast majority of the projects I work on. This involves a number of things and always means something different based on what the artist needs but I love collaborating and helping an artist realize their vision by any means necessary!
