Andy Scarth on SoundBetter

Mixing studio and live performance recordings for over 40 years, with Elton John, Billie Eilish, Bad Bunny, Neil Finn, Jason Mraz, Skepta, Kacey Musgraves, Levellers, Foreigner...

Since 1982, I’ve recorded and mixed music in studios around the world, working with artists including Prefab Sprout, Tina Turner, Howard Jones, Bad Company, Foreigner, Levellers, Killing Joke, Skunk Anansie, Tesla, and Heather Nova.
I began mixing live recordings with The Levellers in 1996 and was immediately drawn to the energy and spontaneity of the format.
Since 2004, I’ve worked closely with Apple Music on a wide range of live-in-studio projects, including the Up Next series with Billie Eilish, Kacey Musgraves, Khalid, Bad Bunny, Neil Finn, Daniel Caesar, and Sigrid, as well as productions with Jason Mraz, Skepta, Labrinth, Little Mix, and The 1975. I’ve also contributed to Apple Music Live shows such as Wizkid, HH50, and the 2023 New Year’s Eve broadcast, all mixed in Atmos.

Alongside this, I’ve collaborated with Live Nation Studios, American Express, Jimmy Kimmel, and Yahoo, producing live concert content for artists ranging from Elvis Costello and Sia to Adele, Sheryl Crow, Kenny Chesney, and Imagine Dragons.

I’m especially drawn to music captured live — where the energy, connection, and unpredictability of performance bring something truly unique to every mix.

Interview with Andy Scarth

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: Peter Gabriel - The man has integrity.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: PT Ultimate, Plugins from Waves, Slate Digital, UAD, Nugen, Sonnox. 7.1.4 Genelec and 2.0 Quested 3110 monitors.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: That it's a technical endeavour and anyone with a computer can do it.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started in 1982 at Farmyard Studios in Buckinghamshire UK with Rupert Hine. Freelanced through the 90's and early 2000's then teamed up with Live Nation Studios in Los Angeles recording and mixing all their concert output for clients including Apple and AmEx. I've continued to freelance throughout and now work from my studio in Oxfordshire.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: There are a bunch of people on here I can recommend. I’d be happy to do so if I‘m unable deliver on your timeline.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I get to listen to new music all day. I still find it exciting being a part of the creative process and it’s always satisfying to see an artist happy with the final result.

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: To treat their music like my own - no shortcuts, just care and attention to detail.

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: Both have their advantages. Analog has a sound, Digital has endless flexibility - and sounds good too.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Who are your influences? Can you send me some songs that have a similar sound and feel to what you are aiming for?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be clear on the big picture. Have a couple of reference songs that sound similar to, or are evocative of, what your aiming for.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Always use your ears and try not to spend too much time 'looking' at your songs.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: It’s actually really varied and I like it that way as I don’t want to develop formulas. Every project has it’s own personality.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: My comittment to bringing each project’s artistic vision to life. Every artist and every song is unique, and my focus is on highlighting that individuality, so each artist’s distinct style stands out.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: In this remote, online world it’s mostly mixing. Stereo and increasingly Atmos. I do however still love to get into a studio now and them to exercise the recording brain.
