Interview with Offbeat Sound Lab
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was honored to master one of the last remixes Lee Perry did. I was funny though. The Upsetter put so much bass in the track, it was hilarious.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Depends on the material.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: 100% reliability and honesty.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping people out to achieve and refine their sound.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually do a call to see if a collaborations fits and does make sense for me. I am of course interested in whats your goals, what you wanna do with the release. Also what you have been releasing till now. Do you play gigs? How many guys are you in the band? How long are you doing this?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Space Echo, Mixer, Palo Santo, my Spring Reverb and a yoga mat.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied audio engineering while beeing active as musician on drums bass and percussion. Stopped playing actively to really focus on producing and helping bands achieving their sound and founded the studio.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style I'd describe as clean, punchy and modern. Rootsy analogue and smooth round sound is not my thing.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Everyone that can play and truly is serious about his or her music is welcome.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Reggae, Dub
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My expertise in dub and reggae. I’m deeply passionate about the genre and pay meticulous attention to every detail in the process.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: 100% dedication, passion and professionalism in the whole process. That starts with binding deadlines and a close contact.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Productions not just starts with mixing. Usually I like doing a call with potential clients to see if the vibe fits and if the collaboration does make sense for me. A chill atmosphere between the client and the engineer is very important to me. We will talk about whats your goals with the release, take a close look at what you exactly need and see if and how I can help you. You can be with me throughout the whole production process via my livestream setup, so we can have a close collaboration on your songs.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am working either digital, analogue or hybrid. Depends on what the production needs. I like keeping it minimalistic to keep everything as clean as possible.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I like modern and clean sound. Therefore bands such as DubInc, Jamaram, Gentleman are bands that I like.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am mixing and mastering exclusively for bands, solo artists, MCs and sound systems. Working with clients all over europe. I also make dubmixes.
