Interview with Stoyan Stoyanov Storn
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My latest orchestral album, New World by Stoyan Stoyanov Storn, is available on all platforms. It took me a year and a half to complete, and I invested in recording live orchestras and producing videos during the recording sessions, where I was conducting. The album embodies my spirit and inspiration, offering pleasant and uplifting music. I believe it has the potential to resonate with everyone, as it’s not tailored to a specific audience. It’s positive and inspirational.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I've completed my orchestral album, which is featured in my account promo, and I'm now starting a new Arabesque project that's cool, mysterious, melodic, and grand.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I try not to make promises, except that I will do a great job and do my best to understand their idea and put my full effort into it.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love my job; it gives me freedom and inspires me deeply. It uplifts me and gives me a profound sense of purpose in life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: There isn’t really a common question since every client is different. However, most inquiries tend to be about pricing. I take every inquiry seriously, conduct a thorough analysis, and provide detailed responses.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that music is not valued as something special or as a unique skill, but rather as something that can be done for little money or almost for free, like a hobby. I have studied music all my life and continue in this career with the confidence that it is a profession. It should be highly valued as part of a significant industry with a high market value.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What will your music be applied to? Are you an artist yourself, or are you a content or media creator? What style are you looking for? Do you have any references you'd like to share with me? Are there any instruments or sounds you can envision in advance? If it's a song, do you have the lyrics ready, and what mood are you aiming for? There’s always more to discuss once the conversation gets started, unless you have specific instructions from the outset.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If you're looking for a highly versatile music producer and composer who can expertly blend and fuse different styles, I’m the right choice. I bring deep musical knowledge and understanding to every project.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Assuming there’s electricity, I’d take my machine, a sound card, a microphone, a MIDI keyboard, and either a set of speakers or headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been studying music since I was 5 years old, with my first instruments being piano and accordion. I play and love the works of Piazzolla, who deeply inspires me. Later, I studied choir conducting, orchestration, composition, and sound engineering. I’m 41 now, and I’ve been immersed in music for almost my entire life. I've been producing for the past 20 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: A rich fusion of symphonic music, strong beats, electronic instruments, world instruments, and whatever is needed for a spot-on delivery.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Film creators, game developers, content creators, as well as pop and jazz artists. I resonate deeply with these styles.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Know your craft and thoroughly research everything you work with. Make sure you have a reliable machine, and continuously improve your instrumental skills.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I specialize in pop, jazz, orchestral, and soundtrack-style music, often infused with world instruments. I particularly incorporate Arabesque influences, as I live in this region, and Bulgarian elements, since I am Bulgarian.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I'm drawn to positive topics and themes; I’m not into negative content. I enjoy motivational ideas, as I create a lot of motivational content myself.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I get inspired easily by any idea. I can listen to your concept and quickly deliver something creative. Often, I grasp my clients' vision from our first communication, and they leave with a big smile on their face.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a small but highly sophisticated collection of top-notch equipment that delivers exceptional live recordings. I also have access to the best virtual libraries and sounds, enabling me to produce any style of music.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by the great film composers of our time and prominent jazz artists, as both jazz and film music are my passions.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I produce and compose music for clients and occasionally write songs as well. I also create music for media and events on demand. Additionally, I handle recordings for bands, instruments, and vocals, and I take care of editing, mixing, and mastering. I specialize in orchestral music composition, orchestrations, fusion, and world music.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital mixing - quick and intuitive. Analog preamps - much better than emulations.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Soundtrack and scoring, orchestration. Deep understanding of my clients.
