Endorse Joshua PearlsteinI have worked with Jp in Berklee on a song for a class, this guy knows what he's doing and is one of the chillest people in this planet
Working with JP was smooth. He’s super chill and the track he made was exactly what I wanted and the whole experience was on point. Definitely hiring him again. If you need quality work from someone who listens and delivers, JP is the one. Couldn't be happier fr.
Interview with Joshua Pearlstein
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: A project I’m really proud of is my single Endorphins, which was my single to ever surpass 100K streams. I wrote the entire song in just 36 hours, and I knew from the beginning that it would be the catchiest, grittiest track I’d ever made. From writing to production, I was fully immersed in the process, and seeing how much it connected with listeners has been incredibly fulfilling. It really pushed me to bring out my best work.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m focused on completing my upcoming album, which blends pop with elements of R&B and electronic music. I’m also actively collaborating with artists on various production and songwriting projects while continuing to refine my sound and push creative boundaries.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m brand new to SoundBetter but incredibly excited to engage with the community and collaborate with fellow artists and professionals. I’m also sure that there are some Berklee colleagues on this platform that I’ve yet to encounter!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their place! I love the warmth and richness of analog gear, but digital tools give me flexibility and precision. For most projects, I find that a hybrid approach works best—combining the character of analog with the clarity of digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to always listen closely to your vision and bring my best to every project. You’ll get a professional track that’s polished and aligns with your creative goals, all delivered on time.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the creative process—taking a rough idea and turning it into a fully polished track. Seeing a client’s reaction when they hear the final product is always rewarding. It’s that collaboration and creation that keeps me passionate about what I do.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Clients often ask, “Can you help me achieve the sound I’m hearing in my head?” My answer is always yes! I make it a priority to understand your vision from the start, and through collaboration, we can bring your ideas to life in a way that exceeds your expectations.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One big misconception is that songwriting or production is a quick process. It takes time to craft something that not only sounds great but also resonates emotionally. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into making a track shine.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I typically ask clients about their vision for the project—what sound they’re going for, their influences, and what kind of message they want to convey (and how I can help in the best way possible!). I also ask about their timeline and any specific ideas they have for the song’s structure or feel.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who not only understands your vision but can also bring fresh ideas to elevate your music. Full creativity is only achieved when nothing is left at the door, so find someone you can collaborate and communicate with comfortably to bring your project to life.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Assuming I'd at least get to pick any gear and not just the gear I own;), I’d take a Minimoog for those rich analog synth sounds, a Neve 1073 preamp for warm and pristine recordings, a pair of Genelec monitors for crystal-clear mixes, a Neumann U87 mic for capturing every vocal nuance, and a fully-loaded MacBook with all my dream plugins. With that setup, I’d be ready to create timeless music anywhere!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been involved in music for a few years now, starting with songwriting and production. About a year and a half into my journey, I got accepted to Berklee College of Music. Since then, I’ve released several tracks with hundreds of thousands of streams and worked with various artists on both songwriting and full-production projects.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d describe my style as modern and versatile. I love blending pop with elements of R&B and electronic music, creating tracks that are both catchy and emotionally resonant. I focus on making music that’s both accessible and unique.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with The Weeknd. His story-telling ability is something I deeply admire, and I think collaborating with him would push me creatively while producing something undoubtedly groundbreaking.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overlook the power of simplicity. Sometimes the best tracks come from stripping things back and letting the core elements—like a great vocal or strong melody—shine through.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mostly work on pop, but I love blending genres like R&B, electronic, and hip-hop to create something fresh and unique. I’m always open to exploring new styles and sounds with my clients.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is creating memorable melodies and strong song structures that stick with listeners, providing unique, one of a kind songs. I’m also skilled at producing high-quality tracks that are both commercially appealing and creatively distinct.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique combination of creativity and technical precision. Whether it’s crafting catchy hooks, building lush arrangements, or ensuring a track has emotional depth, I aim to make every song stand out while staying true to the artist’s voice. Being an artist myself, I know what's needed to make a song successful.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process starts with understanding the artist’s vision. Once we’ve set the direction, I dive into the songwriting or production phase, starting with a strong melody or arrangement. I keep communication open throughout, ensuring the project evolves exactly as the artist envisions. After completing the track, I fine-tune it during mixing and mastering for a polished finish.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio features an Apollo Twin X interface paired with an SM7B microphone for capturing crystal-clear vocals, and Yamaha HS5 monitors to ensure accurate sound throughout the production process. I also incorporate the Roland Juno-GI synthesizer along with a range of instruments to bring unique textures and depth to my tracks. On the software side, I work with Pro Tools and a suite of industry-standard plugins, giving me the flexibility to produce polished, professional-quality music.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by a wide range of musicians and producers, but a few that really stand out are The Weeknd, Max Martin, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and Lady Gaga. Their ability to blend moody, emotional depth with mainstream appeal is something I try to emulate in my songwriting and production. Max Martin and Timbaland, for example, are masters of pop structure and melody—they know how to create timeless hits without sacrificing creativity. Both of them have shaped modern pop in such significant ways, and their work constantly motivates me to innovate and evolve my own style.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most often, I help clients turn their ideas into fully realized tracks. This can range from starting with a rough melody or lyric and developing it into a complete song, or taking a more polished demo and refining the production, arrangement, and mix. I have lots of experience helping my peers at Berklee write songs, and I love working with artists who want to experiment and push the boundaries of their sound. I also enjoy working with emerging artists who are defining their style and need guidance on how to translate their ideas into professional tracks.
