As a producer and as a mixer I view my job description as serving the song and artist, and to make each song shine. Everything to me is judged by how well it frames the artist and the song. If the production or mix is "amazing" or "Impressive" but it's on the wrong song, then the producer or mixer has not done their job well.
When it comes to production, I specialize in turning a simple guitar or piano and vocal into a full arrangement, but I have also been very inspired in settings where the artist has come to me with a particular vision for production and arrangement in mind.
As a mixing engineer, I always have the goals of A. deciding with the artist what the most important elements are of the production, and then making them shine, and B. deciding with the artist what the overall tone of the mix should be (punchy and dynamic vs washy and dreamy, bright and clear vs dark and solemn) and executing on that vision.
Above all else, I am meticulous. I encourage the artists I work with to follow their intuition and to get picky, just as I do. I believe in the innate vision of the artist. My job is to find it, bring it out, and then project it in perfect image through the speakers of millions, no matter how long it takes.
