Interview with Stan Sedziak

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Freelancing! Trying to build a network as a soon-to-be graduate.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Jim Simmons from Adrian, MI. Incredibly kind and skilled engineer. He helped me a lot with setting up as a beginner. https://soundbetter.com/profiles/180142-jim-simmons#profile-profile

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital. Period. If done properly, with the right set of hands, it can easily replicate the sound of "Analog" without any analog horrors like noise or the gear malfunctioning mid-session.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I have 7 years of experience with music production. For the past 3 years, I've been constantly learning, refining, and polishing my engineering skills, so that I can bring something special to the table when working on a project.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Punchy and immersive. I know, "immersive" sounds odd in this context, but this term is my sort of "guiding light" when mixing. Also, I believe it's crucial for the music, especially nowadays, to be mono-compatible. Ask yourself how many people might hear your project for the first time through a single-drive speaker? You wouldn't want them to have a less of a listening experience than people listening on speakers or headphones, right?

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Don't think too much! Let all the creative ideas out as soon as you can. Worry about polishing them later.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: One of my teachers once said that "electronic music and metal are very similar". Whether this opinion is relatable or not, it's true when it comes to mixing. I usually work with heavy, guitar-based genres. Any form of Rock or Metal is always a pleasure to work on. Same with electronic music for some reason.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I usually work from my home studio, in an acoustically treated room with room correction hardware. In this setting, I'm always working "in the box", reaching for my guitar and reverb pedals whenever it's required. As a student, I also have access to professional-sounding studios in Funkhaus Berlin, where I would often reference my work.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Mostly big names, like Spike Stent for his punchy, transient-heavy mixing style, or Forrester Savell for his immaculate mixing work with Karnivool. And of course, Andy Wallace.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Primarily, I am a mixing engineer, and this is what I'm usually hired for. Nevertheless, I'm also able to do mastering or just light editing, such as quantizing or vocal tuning. Whatever your project needs!
