Knyght on SoundBetter

Need memorable score or audio for your project? From Ersatz to the Official Minecraft 15 Year Anniversary I have experience in different genres as well as working for linear and non linear media. I like to collaborate closely with directors and game devs to ensure that the score and audio perfectly complements their vision.

Knyght approaches each composition with a fresh perspective, ensuring that her work is always inspired by the project itself and avoids falling into predictable patterns.

She is known for her work in games, principally Minecraft. In 2024 she worked with Oreville studios in partnership with Mojang and Microsoft on the Official Minecraft 15 Year Anniversary. With Spark Universe, she has released a soundtrack to the Aether Legends (Bedrock edition), and has another soundtrack releasing soon. Alongside working with Minecraft studios, Knyght is working with independent game studios such as Fermented Oddity (The Groundskeeper) and Neon Waves. In the world of film Knyght works with Sigil Audio as well as independently. Her soundtrack credits include ‘Fright’, ‘Fairest of Them All’, and ‘Werewolf: Blood Inheritance’.

As a sound designer Knyght has several films and games under her belt working with SemiColon (Blood Orange), Fermented Oddity (The Groundskeeper), Ersatz, and Sigil Audio Post Production. Her varied work provides an in-depth experience of all sound design disciplines: foley, dialogue, sound effects, and ambiences. Using her musical knowledge allows her to create cohesive tonal sounds that bring life to the project. Understanding the importance of how the sounds are implemented in-game, Knyght is well versed in middle-ware usage.

Interview with Knyght

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: My main work is composing soundtracks however I also do a lot of sound design and post-production audio. The most common genre I work in is Horror though I do work in many other styles. I've handled all sound design departments from foley and sound design to dialogue editing to the final mix.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I worked on the Minecraft 15 Year Anniversary. For this I had to create a soundtrack that really nailed the classic Minecraft sound and brought that nostalgic feeling to players. Once the project was released the soundtrack was well received with players praising the immaculate vibes!

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Currently working with Fermented Oddity on their upcoming game Stone the Crows. I'm writing a Medieval inspired soundtrack with lots of battle tracks, bringing in a mix of 21st century instruments alongside Medieval and Renaissance instruments to create a new blend that has great energy and drive. It's super fun and I'm working with lots of live musicians to really bring the music to life and keep it as authentic as possible.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I like looking back to the beginning of a project once we're at the end and realising how much of an impact the music and audio has made on the final piece.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What story are you looking to tell with your project, what are we going to emphasise with the music?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Best practice is to have a budget, deadline, and what you want from the music in mind, we can work out how best to approach the project from there!

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: Fresh out of Uni in 2020 (during the chaos), I started working with my friend Liam Montgomery at Oreville Studios on Minecraft content. A year or so later I began working with James Cox at Sigil Audio doing music and post production for films. After that my work took off and I became a part of several game teams such as Fermented Oddity, Semicolon, and Neon Waves as well as working as part of the post-production team for Ersatz.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Disasterpeace a.k.a Rich Vreeland as he has been a huge inspiration to me throughout my career and I feel like our styles would gel really nicely (who would've guessed!)

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: If you've got sound effects/audio files synced up to the visuals, use SMPTE lock to stop them from moving about when you want to change the tempo of your project. (in Logic at least)

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: My work so far has been a broad range from whimsical fun to tense dark horror. I've written from ambient tracks to battle tracks on that spectrum and have in-depth experience writing both linear and non-linearly. A lot of my soundtracks have required repeating motifs that develop as the story unravels. I'm currently delving into new territory for myself working on a Medieval inspired soundtrack.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: Creating a strong and recognisable motif for the soundtrack whether it's a melody or a different kind of auditory cue like a solo instrument or sound design-esque element.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: My musical taste is an eclectic mix of genres and my curiosity and experimentation has created an accomplished multi-genre composer. Each project I work on benefits from a customised approach. The choice of focus could be establishing strong motifs, the importance of a solo instrument, a foundation of rhythmic percussion, or something else entirely. Creating a collaborative atmosphere when working with musicians, I lean into the skills and uniqueness of each performer to help bring my composition to life in a natural and refreshing way. Additionally, I utilise my in-depth knowledge of sound design to add to my compositions in creative ways.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: Hardware: Mac Desktop, Macbook Air, Monogram modular deck, Adam Audio Monitors + Subwoofer. Keyboard, interface etc. Software: Logic, Cubase, Reaper. RX11 Advanced suite. Final Cut Pro.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Particular favourites and strong influences include: Disasterpeace (Hyper Light Drifter, Fez), Joe Hisaishi (Studio Ghibli), and Olivier Deriviere (A Plague Tale, Vampyr) - to name but a few.
