Johannes Häger on SoundBetter

Swedish Producer, Mixing Engineer and Musician with over twenty years of experience.

I work as a fulltime Music Producer and Mixing Engineer in Loud Noise Studios, Sweden, mainly in mainstream Pop and Rock. Other genres include Hard Rock, Indie Rock, Progressive Rock, Singer Songwriter, Modern Worship, Gospel, Country, Hip Hop and Jazz.

I have worked on hundreds of releases through the years. I have a meticulous approach to mixing, focusing on what’s most important in the mix, my mix philosophy is based on clarity. I both sing and play the guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, which is a huge help for me as a mixing engineer

I have studied Music Production and Musicology at the Abo Akademi University and Vaxjo University, and have also been a part of the Mix With The Masters program, with Andrew Scheps (Metallica, Beyonce etc) as the teacher.

What I always ask from my clients: A description of how you want it to sound. A rough mix if possible. Reference track(s).

Interview with Johannes Häger

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My own band Streetlight's album "Ignition", very fun music to play and the feedback has been amazing, both from fans and reviews. I'm the lead singer and rhythm guitar player in the band, I write the songs, record them, mix them and produce them.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: You will be satisfied.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: To work with music and being creative.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What do you want with your music? How would you like it to sound? Do you have any reference tracks? What's the time schedule?

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I've been working as a fulltime engineer and producer for ten years, I've had my own music studio for over twenty years. I'm a musician/songwriter/arranger who wanted to record my own music, that's how I got started. I've been playing in bands for thirtyfive years.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Clarity and punch.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Kill your darlings :)

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Radio friendly rock and pop.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Finding what mix is best for the song, finding the most important elements in the song.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I spend some time listening to the rough mix and the reference music. I set up all the tracks as I want them in my DAW, I ususally start with the drums and bass, then the lead vocal.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I mix 100% in the box, I work in Pro Tools Ultimate HDX, my main speakers are Amphions with a Trinnov Audio system. Other gear include Bock Audio and Neumann mics, Universal Audio, Amek, SSL mic pres, a bunch of guitars, amps, keyboards etc.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Mixing engineer Andrew Scheps, I attended his Mix With The Masters mixing seminar ten years ago, and still to this day I benefit from what I learned from him. Mixing engineer Jens Bogren, I was an intern at his studio back in the day, that really helped me evolve as a mixing engineer.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Mixing songs they've recorded somewhere else. Producing artists who bring their own songs.
