For the Love of Music

Jarrod Lee on SoundBetter

I have a passion for making music. Seeking opportunities for collaboration, session work, or recording. I'm in the process of recording my entire catalogue as an independent.

I'm not an award winning artist or engineer. I don't pretend to be a musical guru or expert on music recording. I rely on a day job that pays very well to care for my family and responsibilities. What I offer is a passion for making music, a willingness to learn and a humbled heart with no ego. Seeking opportunities for collaboration, session work, or recording. I'm in the process of recording my entire catalogue as an independent.

Interview with Jarrod Lee

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: There is no right or wrong way to play music - experiment and let the individual artists contribute their unique flavor.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Rock and blues

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Listening to the band members and knowing when to lay off or jump in.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Understanding my role in a song, in other words letting the song breath. Not every song needs every instrument playing at the same time.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Ideas for my songs vary. But once the idea or arrangement begins to take shape, I typically find a tempo that I can riff over comfortably. I typically hum the words over the riff to create the arrangement. Once the arrangement is set, I go back and refine the main rhythm parts, bass, drums, and add anything missing or even take away something. Lastly, I will record the vocals.

  11. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  12. A: Hasn't happened yet

  13. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  14. A: Personal project to record and distribute my personal catalogue

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: No preference. Both have pros and cons.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: Commitment and artist freedom. I feel the artist should have creative freedom and final say in the entire production.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Know what you want and go after it. Don't compromise yourself but be open to other perspectives.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My J45 is all I would need and maybe a backup, a harmonica, and a violin.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: bluesy, gritty, non conforming, play when needed but not over do it

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Frank Hannon & Buddy Guy. Buddy guy because he is the last hero I had as a kid still alive. Frank because I feel like our styles are very similar yet distant. I really like acoustic tracks and hard rock riffs and you can hear his flavor of both all over Tesla and his solo work. Also, I think we have similar influences.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Frank Hannon, Gary Rossington, Greg Allman, Buddy Guy, Izzy Stradlin,

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Guitar, Bass, Keys, Recording, Mixing
