Interview with VNTM

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1knSIsecMNirdNEIbqzgut?si=Qaa3nHeUSfixoyufQbeXDA Mixed everything for the Poser Party

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: an Album for my artist project and improving my studio acoustics

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Check out Charles Oliver and Conor Dalton

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. both have its charmes, usually I work in the box but some tracks need that extra bit of analog dirt. In the box im using a lot of analog emulations which I think sound decent enough to deliver quality music.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I give it my best shot, and want to deliver something that works. I'm devoting more time than I probably should to earn minimum wage, but the end result is everything.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The nerdy stuff, once a mix comes together and all the pieces of the puzzle fit.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you fix my kick? - probably yes, but might replace your lowest frequencies Can you make my track as loud as X producer? - depends on every mix in your sound

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I cant turn a turd into a diamond.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: -reference tracks -prefered label/sound -current experience -mix weakness + mix strength

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: build a personal connection, trust and communication is key! Be explicit about your wishes and be clear about the sound you are expecting to reach with your music, providing examples of what you DO like but also of stuff you DONT like is vital into building the relationship.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: my laptop, waldorf iridium core, keyboard and Elektron Rytm mk2 + 1 crazy fx pedal

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: started 13+ years ago, followed a bachelor music degree on Herman Brood Academy in the Netherlands. Then followed multiple private courses with Conor Dalton, Marco Spaventi, SAE and other instances. Been playing shows internationally including: Tomorrowland, Awakenings, Burningman, Printworks, Hi ibiza and many more

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Techno with a melodic twist, deep and hypnotic with a focus on drive and energy. Mix style: clinical and to the point with a focus on the function and low-frequency balance.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Noisia, everyone that knows them knows why I would love to spend a few hours in the studio with them.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: control = everything, start with the right sound-source and be picky about it. a good sound doesn't need 20 plugins to tweak its core, so work on designing the sound from the synth-source and then tune it to the mix with eq and maybe dynamic control.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: techno melodic techno deep house

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: mixing + production and analyzation of audio which includes phase aligning and detailed work on the low-end + sidechain.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: A hyper focus for functionality on club systems, making sure the kick and bass translate correctly and have decent space in the mix without pushing the elements away that provoke a feeling.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Analyzing the core of the music, which parts are making me feel something or give a strong sense or urgency. Then I'm trying to figure out which sounds are distracting me from that foundation. Listening to reference tracks and figuring out how close the material is to clients music. After that I'm trying to localize problems that make the mix translate badly on my system. Once I have those I can come up with a plan and start usually with mixing kick and bass, once the track starts rolling and the energy distribution is right.. mixing everything else comes quite naturally.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: ADAM S3V studio monitors UAD Apollo X8 interface countless hardware synths like: Elektron Rytm mk2, Waldorf Iridium Core, Prophet Rev2, multiple Moogs, Novation Peak, Nord Wave2 and a Korg M1

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Conor Dalton from Berlin is one of my tutors, his expertise is endlessly inspiring. Marco Spaventi used to have his studio in the same building as mine and we often swapped gear to test out and geek-out over little details, very inspiring to see a master engineer like him work.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: most of my work is based around mixing, sometimes with stems sometimes diving deeper into the material by going into the project. I believe some mixing issues form itself at the core of the material and need fixing at the source, rather than at the fixed stems.
