Interview with Dan Diamant
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I think it's mostly a case-by-case basis, blanket statements and generalizations lack nuance in this topic. In the end, this decision should be made according to the artist's (or the song's) needs in each case. Personally I feel more at home when working with digital recording and DAWs, since I have more experience with these.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The ability to listen to new music that hasn't seen the light of day yet, and help along the way of creating and polishing it to help it come out to the world - making the music the best it can possibly be before airing it out.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in a professional studio environment, equipped with a SSL X-Desk Super Analogue Mixer into an Apogee Rosetta 800 AD/DA Converter and a variety of preamps, monitored by one set of Quested V3110 and one set of Yamaha NS-10.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I can't stress this enough - the importance of different stages of production and troubleshooting everything you can in a certain stage before moving on to the next one. it's better to record with good quality and technique than to have to surgically remove or fix background noises during the mixing stage, for example.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly things in the realm of rock, punk (and its many different offshoots), and alternative - but I'm open to many other genres such as folk, jazz, blues, hiphop, and mostly anything. I also like to compose instrumental and cinematic pieces with strong classical influence.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My greatest inspiration when it comes to production/recording etc is Steve Albini, I admire his philosphy and work ethic, even if I work in different methods. Aside from him, Yossi Fein is a prominent figure I look up to.
