Interview with Walter Babbini

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: They are both awesome! Recall-ability, control, there are many things that only plugins can do but hitting analog compressors, eq's and tube saturators adds a vibe that's very different and unique.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: Quality, time & effort, satisfaction guaranteed. I want them to love the work. I will keep working or apply a new way of producing or mixing to get the best final result!

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: The feeling that I have contributed to shaping a still raw work. I get to be creative and help others finish a vision that they started.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Never hesitate to ask questions about the process. And invest in your projects. A mix can't save a crappy recorded drum set or out of tune guitars. A mastering can't save a bad mix. Good production can't save poor songwriting.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Apple Mac with pro tools hdx, Kii Three Pro, Lavry Savitr, a guitar, a mic

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I have been doing this for 25 years. I started off as a guitar player in my mid school days. Around the age of twenty I started to producing in recording studios as a freelancer. I got some analog gear and a few guitars/amps/synths and that's were it all began! In the mid 2000s I opened my own recording studio where I was lucky to work and assist world-famous professionals such as Michael Brauer, David Bianco, Alan Parsons, Ross Cullum, Jack Endino and many international artists from all over the world.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: In this job you need to have different nuances in my opinion, having something special that makes it stand out from the rest. I can create hi-fi sound but when appropriate with heavy compression, distortion or other lo-fi elements. I tend to gravitate towards big/warm/full mark but I can add a lot of detail when needed. I love emotional music that makes a statement.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: A bit of everything. My clients tend to largely come for my hip pop, electro pop and indie credits, but I love mixing more acoustic music, especially folk, rock, blues, funk.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My creative and technical abilities with all aspects of the entertainment industry in general. I love being bold with my work and trying new things.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I have been producing, arranging, mixing and mastering everyday for more than half of my life. I've had gold and platinum records, over 500+ Million Spotify Streams, I know how to find the core of the music and make sure it's presented in the best light. I bring 30 years of being a musician and 25 years of being a pro in the Recording industry, I also bring creative, cool elements to the song when an artist allows me the freedom to do.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: It's different depending on whether the job is mixing, mastering or production, but I always start listening the song/references, feeling the mood. I then make some notes about what I can do and how I think I can take the track to the next level. I want to add my experience, skill and vibe to the song but it's very important keeping the original artists vision.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: Hundreds of plugins, Avid Pro Tools Ultimate HDX with 4 HD I/O 64x64, Lavry Savitr, Dangerous DBox+, Kii Three Pro.
