Interview with Emory Carroll
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I believe that the most important part of my job as a session drummer is to listen. I always like to listen to a song at least once or twice before sitting down behind the drums, and I take the time to image how different drum sounds could interact with and impact the existing elements of the song. At the core of it, a song is meant to convey an emotion, and my job as a drummer is to further this emotional expression.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My setup is in a building that was previously a garage separate from my house, but is now a music studio. I've been collecting instruments and microphones for the past few years, and have no intention of stopping anytime soon!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Some of my biggest inspirations when it comes to artists/bands are Paramore, Winnetka Bowling League, Deep Sea Diver, Mt. Joy, and Beno. While these are some of my current favorites, I love music as a whole and am always excited to discover new genres and artists, and my tastes are constantly shifting. In terms of my drumming, I take great inspiration from Nate Smith, Aaron Sterling, Jordan Rose, Louis Cato, Theo Katzman, and Zac Farro, among many others.
