Miguel is a great engineer to work with and great hang as well. Highly recommend for those who have a specific vision for a project or just bare bones of songs. Quick turnaround times and very receptive to client input!

Interview with MACZ

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Is There Anyone? EP by Preston Lydotes was by far the most fun I've had on a project. I recorded and mixed this project in the studio with the band and was my first big project as an audio engineer.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm mixing a rock record for a female client of mine.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital because it allows me to be quicker and more precise with the work I'm doing. Analog is great but it has an element of randomness that I don't always want.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: I usually ask for 1-2 reference tracks to get a sense of what they would like their music to sound similar to.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I enjoy working with artists who have a vision for their music and know relatively what they want. I know the technical stuff can be daunting to some artists but reference tracks and moods often tell me what it is you are going for.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: I try not to add too much to a song. I believe its a mixer's job to service the song, not themselves.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I start by listening to what the artist has given me to get familiar with the track. I will also listen to the references that are provided to get an idea of the target sound. Depending on the raw material I get, I'll spend time cleaning up mistakes, timing errors, tuning, etc. I'll then spend a few hours starting with a rough balance of the tracks. Add dynamics and EQ, and spacial fx where needed, then send off a 1st draft to my client for feedback.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Tchad Blake is a big inspiration when it comes to mixing. I love how powerful and huge his mixes sound on records like Last Shadow Puppets and Wallows.
