Interview with Jeff Hoeppner
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was asked to produce a song for a countertenor, Drew Tablak. He needed a string section and a choir to record all at once with him leading as a soloist. The song was a dedication to the anniversary of Mathew Shepherd’s unfortunate death, and I could not have been more proud to have recorded, produced and mixed such a profoundly uplifting and hopeful song of redemption and forgiveness. Go check out MEET ME HERE by Drew Tablak!!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on an ambient record, a couple indie pop records, and a film score.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. They’re all tools, we use them because they are there, because we honor the process of interacting with those who come before us, and those who will come after.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: We will have fun, do hard work, and want to do more work when we finish.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love opening people up to their true potential and power as a creative artist.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do I have the talent to be an artist full-time? I think focusing on talent is only the beginning step of learning who you are as an artist. What really make the biggest difference (in anything of life) is how DRIVEN you are to be a thing. Nobody can accidentally become famous, rich, loved by all… it takes a lot of discipline to refine talent, to network properly, to make your life a living piece of art ~ warts and all. Be more than talent.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: To do this job properly, it really takes a hundred hours of focus and mental willpower. I can work very fast, but only because I’ve worked the process of crafting a song 1,000 times.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: If you could open for any act, who would it be and why?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: A producer is like a glove. They have to fit the hand of the artist. We’re not all created equally, so take time to interview and get to know the person you’re going to trust with your creativity and artistry.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop, an Apollo interface, a controller keyboard, an AKG c12, and something to keep the sand out of all this expensive stuff!!! 😂
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started off mixing records over the Internet in the late 90s. I’ve been doing this work for about 23 years, but as consistent professional, about 19 1/2 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my music as high energy, punchy, and fun!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Chappell Roan - she’s the real deal! Hard working, great creative vision, a true artist.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It’s really important to show up ready to do work, with empathy and vulnerability, and being willing to try new things for the benefit of making the audio recording sound the best as possible.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I generally work on pop music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Making the artist feel safe in a sometimes intimidating and ever changing landscape. I also make a great cup of coffee.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I’ve been doing this for roughly 20 years at this point, so what I honestly bring is wisdom and perspective. Music is a constantly changing landscape, but a great song will always be a great song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I really like to start with a vibe day, listening to a lot of songs with the artist to help us both better understand the things that turn them on as a listener and as an artist. After that, I will make a couple skeleton ideas, see which one they’re feeling, and then proceeded with writing a song on top of that track.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I currently create all of my tracks at my home studio, and when it’s time to go in for a big vocal day, I will rent out a nice room with great equipment to make sure we get the best possible vocal.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am a huge fan of Max style Productions. They always feel nice, I have a timeless quality, and always make sure they artist is the focal point.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Typically, I am an artist, focused producer, meaning that I will spend a lot of time getting to know the likes and dislikes of the artist, how to help their sound conform to current energetic standards, and how to let their artistry shine above all else.
