Interview with Midrange Music

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: NDA says I can't discuss this. But Hotboiiz by EBK Jaaybo is only a prequel for whats to come.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. Certain things, a plugin can't fix, like clipping for instance, if you use a compressor before recording, chances of clipping while maintaining a high input level are low.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: Quality. Quality. Quality. We guarantee your audience can hear the difference, they just don't know there's a difference. We promise top of the line quality work.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: The passion. It's more about making a record, not a song.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: WE. DON'T. PUSH. BUTTONS. Engineers can't just "make you sound good" on a whim. Normally we are extremely critical of our work, and we need time to perfect the mix.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: How long have you been working on music? How many songs do you have out? Autotune, or Melodyne? How do you expect me to make you sound purple?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Be picky, but open. Not all engineers have an ear, and some have an ear and ideas to bring to the table.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: Microphone, headphones, laptop, distressor, and a generator that runs on sand.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: We've been in business for 20+ years. Starting in the basement, then moving into our first commercial studio, and then moving again to the location that earned us multiple platinum and gold plaques.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Natural. We do our best to make you sound like you're in the listeners room with them, not recorded over a microphone.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Mix your beats, and leave headroom.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Typically rap, trap, and RnB, but we also get a couple country bands and rock bands that like to record with us.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Listening to the artist.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: We have a history of redefining standards for our city, artists, and other industry professionals.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Generally mixing, mastering, and Dolby Atmos, but we also focus on production and vocal production.

Absolutely love the new Pump 500 Series by Empirical Labs. Sounds very close to the distressor! If you have the budget to pick one up we can't recommend it enough!
