Indie Folk Mixing/Mastering

Kristen Mark Westwood on SoundBetter

I specialize in working with independent artists to craft a sound uniquely your own, that captures your voice and tells your story. I've mixed and mastered records for songwriters, spoken word artists and producers from across Canada, helping them prepare their tracks for professional release.

As a songwriter and producer myself, I understand the creative process back to front and am a dedicated collaborator. I'll work with you to help your songs sonically match your reference material so they can find a home on playlists among commercially released tracks.

Here's what one of my clients - singer-songwriter Jason Normore - had to say about working with me ...

"Truly, I cannot emphasize enough how much of a pleasure it was to have Kristen working on my project. His insights, open posture, and skill elevated the final product beyond what I could have imagined. There was nothing passive about the experience; from start to finish, his personal interest and investment in the process were evident. His attention to the details of the song we were working on was remarkable, and in the back-and-forth of its production, his tastes and perception brought life out of my music that I didn't even
realize was there myself."

You can check out my work on Jason's song right here on this page. If you like it, let's talk - I'd love to hear about your project!

Interview with Kristen Mark Westwood

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: Most importantly, I want to know the story behind the project. Getting a sense of what the song or album means to my client, and what emotion or message they want to convey, is paramount. Music is all about communication! I like to ask for 1-2 references for each project I'm working on, as well as a rough mix if available, so that I have a clear target in mind that aligns with my clients vision for the song.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I've done everything from electronic music to spoken word poetry, but my sweet spot is indie folk.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: I like to start with a phone call to discuss the project and get to know each other a little bit. We'll talk about reference tracks, the story behind the song and any other goals you have for the track so that I have a clear idea of your vision before we start the mix. I work remotely and will send you what I consider to be a completed mix when it's finished, after which we can refine it until you are happy and ready to release your track!

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Mostly I mix and master records for my clients, but I have a range of services available including: editing (i.e. time-quantizing, comping, etc.); tracking (piano/keys, guitars and vocals); producing; audio engineering
