Interview with Oarber
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project that I am especially proud of being a part of is the song Benden Bu Kadar by Patron. Without any knowledge on my end, they sampled my guitar loop from the internet and created a wonderful arrangement around it. The song is a massive hit in Turkey and the music video has garnered millions of plays. I dream of one day visiting Turkey and in my imagination, while I am sitting in a cafe, they are playing my guitar over the speakers as people order their food.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I am working on my friend PheonixOutThe's next project as well as fine-tuning my guitar playing ability and keyboard skills. I'm also learning to sing from my wife who is a natural soprano.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, I am still quite new here.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because it is much easier to use, is cheaper and also sounds better. In addition, no matter how much analog gear you are running, eventually that signal is going to have to be converted into an electrical current and brought into the digital realm.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is that you will NEVER wonder where your music is or how to access it. With OK No Way, the artist and the art are at the forefront, with all your music stored in a link that you can save and access anywhere, anytime.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like the freedom and flexibility to work when and where I want and the ability to be my own boss.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common question I get is, "Can you put my music on Spotify playlists?" and the answer I give is always no. Spotify playlists are heavily curated and paying for promo on sketchy playlists can get your account banned permanently.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I'm a DJ.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I normally ask to listen to music they have already worked on themselves to gauge where I can provide the most tangible value.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Before you hire me ask yourself, "Do I genuinely have a passion for music or am I just going through the motions to look cool and please my peers?"
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An Apollo x8, a Shure SM58, a Mogami XLR cable, a Dell Laptop, and a pair of Sennheiser headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been making music in one way or another since 2008.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Love Hard, Live Now
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Nas because he can spit over any kind of beat and still make it Hip-Hop.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When making beats or mixing tracks make sure to start at a low volume and in mono to get the volume balances first then slowly introduce more gain and stereo information to taste.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-Hop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communication
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring direction, focus, discipline and energy!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every song is different and I try to honor that by not having one specific workflow built off a predictable set of presets and plugin chains.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is designed to produce a great sound with minimal clutter. There is plenty of space and I love spending time in my comfortable chair working on music!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I find inspiration in every day life.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for my clients is mixing vocal stems over two-track beats.
