Musician, editor, and mixer with over 15 years production experience!
Hi! I'm a musician, editor, and music mixer from Raleigh, North Carolina. I've been making music in some capacity or other for over 15 years, and I've worked in all sorts of different genres, from EDM to pop to trap to ambient.
You should hire me because: I work fast, I have the experience and software/equipment to translate your ideas into the music you want, and I have the mixing and mastering expertise to make it sound polished.
Some projects I've been part of:
-Guitarist, singer, producer, and songwriter as 1/2 of local band AKLF
-DJ, producer, and performer as LXC and Miss Machina
-Composer and producer of two original scores for "Vampire the Masquerade: ATL By Night"
-Composer, producer, and performer of "35 Louder", the original soundtrack for season 3 of "The Blood Crow Stories"
-Freelance audio editor for local drag and burlesque performers
-Currently composing the original score for Love and Horror Productions' "Your Husband Was a Good Man"

Interview with Miss Machina
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm actually still in the middle of this - I'm the score composer and sound designer for my friend Jamie's short film Your Husband Was a Good Man. It's very slow and tense and dramatic, and my production is usually a lot more upbeat and fast-paced, so it's a fun challenge and the feedback I've been getting has been WILDLY fulfilling!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently recording and mixing my band's first EP!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Shaun Roy is a good friend and an excellent producer!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog definitely sounds cooler, but I use primarily digital equipment just because it's cheaper.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will put everything I have into making the music or edits you want, and I will get it done quick.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to creatively express myself while fulfilling my client's requests - I enjoy flexing my production skills any chance I get.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "Can you really put this together in less than three days?" Yes.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The belief that it doesn't take a TON of practice and failing upward to get good at it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What mood or atmosphere do you want to set? Which artists would you like this to be reminiscent of?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Please be thorough when asking for what you want! Even if you're not a technically-minded musician, there's a lot I can do with descriptions of the mood or atmosphere you want to set.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, charger, monitors, mouse, and external hard drive - that way I'd have all my instruments with me as well as plenty of games to pass the time.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started making music in middle school and was bad at it casually for several years while I figured out how to collaborate with other musicians, so nearly 20 years now! I started DJing in 2022 and editing for friends in 2023.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Energetic, dynamic, and upbeat with a strong sense of melody.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Everybody wants to work with Chappell Roan, including me. I feel like we could create some absolute chaos applying her songwriting style to my production style.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Test your mix on every speaker possible to make sure it sounds good in any context!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic, pop, trap, and rock, but I can apply my editing skills to anything.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communication! I have a master's in it!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A strong understanding of pop music theory, versatility in working with audio effects and editing tools, and a love of dynamic sounds.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I work really fast with music, so I will receive a gig, download the necessary files, and make my edits ASAP, usually same-day. If I'm producing tracks, that obviously takes a little bit longer, but I tend to choose instruments and samples that fit the mood and energy described by my client and send them regular updates to ensure everyone is satisfied.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a ROG Strix gaming laptop with Ableton Live 11 Suite and a pair of IK Multimedia iLoud monitors. When recording I use a Focusrite Scarlett Solo.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Space Laces, Skrillex, Boards of Canada, Juelz, Denzel Curry, Don Broco, Ocean Grove, Steve Albini
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My main work is audio editing, so I can cut single songs down to certain lengths as well as cut multiple songs together to meet a specific standard. I can also produce, mix, and master electronic music.
