Interview with Kalen Henry

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: My father is a professional bassist in the Los Angeles area, with 40+ years of experience in all facets of the music industry. I am forever inspired by his unparalleled talent and his devotion to ensuring the continued presence of real, high-quality music in the world for all to enjoy. I am also of course inspired by my favorite musical artists for their immense vocal skill, such as Adele and Sam Smith; their lyrical vulnerability, such as Macklemore and Imagine Dragons; and their timelessness in an ever-changing world, such as Cat Stevens and The Beatles.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: I record lead and background vocals for song arrangements awaiting the polished touch of a skilled singer. I wholeheartedly implement all client instruction and direction into my performances to help achieve the client's ultimate vision. I can add vocal embellishments, provide harmony and melody alternatives, and perform vocal doubling/tripling/comping.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will get the job done, and I'll get it done well!

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: What I enjoy most about making music is the sounds musicians create together. Each part intertwines to form something mesmerizing, and we're all transported to an unparalleled zone where the music hijacks our souls and takes us to someplace better.  A world full of people, different in almost every single way, but united by a love for the art of music-- it truly is a beautiful thing.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: I am an introvert at heart, and that kind of personality doesn’t always fit this career path. I sometimes struggle to find enjoyment when performing in front of others, and as a perfectionist, I’m inarguably my own worst critic. Nevertheless, I’m always working to overcome these things with a smile on my face and confidence in my heart because I love singing and I truly want to be the best musician I can possibly be.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I come from a jazz-focused household, and much of my released discography includes jazz influences. Yet, I perceive my singing voice to be a memorable mixture of Indie, Alternative, Jazzy, Soulful, and Pop influences. It has been compared to Norah Jones’ voice on several occasions, but not many others-- I believe this inability to relate my product to other artists is what makes my singing ability so special.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: Every time I open my mouth, I relish in the opportunity to share my unique sound with the rest of the world. I'm often told that the way I look and speak does not match the voice that I sing with, and that my singing voice is further difficult to draw comparisons to with other well-known artists. On top of my singular sound, I am both a perfectionist who strives for high-quality work and pitch-accuracy, and an extremely organized planner who thrives on prompt scheduling and provision of results. Lastly, I love to sing. I will love music until my last day on Earth, and I want nothing more than to spend my 'privilege of life' being wrapped up in something so divinely and profoundly intangible.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I electronically receive audio files of song arrangements from clients, typically one version with demo/scratch vocals and one without, as well as the song's intended message/purpose and thus a requested vocal treatment for the song. I practice this new song using both audio files and client instruction over an extremely brief period of time to gain basic familiarity, and then I promptly set up a recording session with my on-hand engineers. Per my skill of Absolute Pitch, I typically perform and record multiple takes of verses, choruses, and bridges until I am satisfied with both their pitch accuracy and emotional treatment. I occasionally keep all passing takes if the client would prefer to select their ideal versions for their final, singular song product. At the direction of the client, I can add vocal embellishments, provide harmony and melody alternatives, and perform vocal doubling/tripling. I usually learn and perform desired harmonies on the spot in the studio, but clients are also welcome to provide additional audio files in advance that solely feature harmony tracks for expedited practicing/recording. My on-hand engineers are able to mix the final song vocals and arrangement for an additional fee if desired, and then I am able to send the final product to the client in any file format of their choice.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I have 24/7 access to an extremely well-equipped home studio in Los Angeles. While my knowledge of studio engineering is more superficial, I have in-house relatives who are fluent in Logic and ProTools; quality mic and recording equipment; and mixing and mastering. I'm all about the amazing collaborative processes that bring new music into the world.
