Interview with Alexander Khait

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: I draw inspiration from a wide range of musicians and music production professionals across different genres and eras. Growing up, I was deeply influenced by iconic 60s and 70s psychedelic rock artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Who, 13th Floor Elevators, and Pink Floyd. Their innovative use of effects, experimental techniques, and expansive soundscapes continues to shape my approach to music production. In more recent years, I’ve been inspired by modern indie and psychedelic bands such as Ty Segall, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Fuzz, Thee Oh Sees, Tame Impala (especially their first three albums), and Pond. These artists push the boundaries of sound with their raw energy, inventive songwriting, and adventurous production choices. Additionally, I have a fascination with the gritty intensity of industrial punk bands like IDLES, Viagra Boys, and The Psychotic Monks. Their raw, unapologetic approach to music-making challenges me to explore unconventional sounds and capture authentic emotion in my work. Overall, my inspiration comes from those who fearlessly experiment with sound and emotion, pushing the boundaries of what music can achieve both sonically and culturally.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: As a mixing engineer specializing in indie music, I focus on creating great mixes that bring out the best in my client's songs. I work closely with musicians and producers to understand what they want their music to sound like. This includes balancing and enhancing each part of the song, like drums and guitars, using tools like old tape echoes and fuzz pedals to get unique sounds. I also use tape machines to make the music sound warm and full. I don’t just mix; sometimes I also help with producing, where I give creative ideas to make the music better. This can mean suggesting changes to how the music is arranged or trying new sounds to make the overall production more interesting. My goal is to always go beyond what my clients expect, making mixes that connect with listeners both emotionally and in how they sound.
