Interview with Samuel Diokpo AKA AdamasV
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Projects are numerous
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yessss. Anthony Killhofer. He is a god amongst men. Also Matty Harris. He doesnt know it, but he has taught me so much over the years. I owe a lot to these 2 men
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. I was brought up on digital. I adore the legends of the Analog era. They paved the way for what i do. All their tricks and tips i replicate in the digital realm. from Mike Dean, Bruce Swedien, Dave Pensado, CLA, these are old gods to me. But we are in the age of digital. My mentor, Jaycen Joshua and Serban Gheneas, inspired me to be an engineer in the box.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I am relentless in achieving you visions sonically. if i need to fly to a studio in another city country or even planet to run signals through gears and achieve that integrity you desire, i will. My grit and tenacity is yours
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I meet people with desires from all walks of life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How is it you ended up being a Musician or Engineer, you should have been a Pastor or Psychologist.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I turn nobs and push buttons.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you hope to achieve sonically? What is your desire with the record?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Understand that yes, we are here to make money, but the love for the art comes first. You just have to show me you are equally as intoxicated with what we do.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My trusty ssd, Motu M4 Dac, My Alien Ware, Rode Nt1, A pair of Rokit G5s
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Long story short, i come from immigrant parents, and we all know how the story goes. Go to school to become a Lawyer or Doctor, i refused, dropped out and chased my dreams. It wasn't easy convincing them, but they came around full time. Crazily, my Pops has been into music since his youth though an Architect, so naturally the gift kind of rubbed off on me. Started off producing, trying to replicate songs i was hearing on the radio, now i produce my own songs, Mix and master. I have been doing this for about 4 years privately( incubation) and as a profession 2 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Industrial. There are no limits to what we can achieve together with sonics. I try to push the envelope. I saturate harder, I drop amplitudes to near inaudible, I evoke emotion.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: It is my goal to work with Ye, Bonjovi, Dua Lipa, Burna Boy, Lady Gaga
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: No matter the session or artist or individuals in the room, when the fun ends. leave the desk. Its important to preserve the energy used to create. Mj and Bruce Swedien, mixed Billie Jean 91 times before finally using mix 2. Because, it preserved the energy of the original intention of the track or record. You don't have to get to mix 91 to achieve sonic brilliance. Most times the energy and intent can be achieved by just taking a break from the board to get yourrself back and find the fun again no matter the genre or record.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Trap, Reggaeton, Afro Beats, Neo Gospel, Pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My ability to listen analytically and comprehensively. This is a skill that I learned the tough way. Now, i am the Rick Rubin of listening.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Life, Energy, Excitement, melancholy(if needed), lots of laughs.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My music setup combines cutting-edge technology with premium components. At its core is a Softube Console 1 and an Apollo x6 interface, ensuring top-tier sound quality. I use Rode NT1 and Neumann microphones for pristine audio capture. For monitoring, I rely on Neumann KH 80's and Rokit G5 speakers, providing accurate and detailed sound. All connections are made with gold-plated wires, ensuring optimal signal integrity. This setup, blending modern digital tools and high-quality analog gear, enables me to produce a wide range of sounds, ensuring each project is unique and sonically captivating.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a producer/engineer, my sound is shaped by a diverse array of influences, spanning multiple genres and eras. Kanye West’s innovative beats and Bon Jovi's timeless rock anthems lay the groundwork for my musical journey. The legendary sounds of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, combined with the powerful vibes of Three Days Grace and Burna Boy’s unique afro-fusion, have profoundly impacted my creative development. I draw inspiration from the industrial sounds of Rammstein and Seal's soulful, emotive voice. Kavinsky's retro, synth-driven vibes add a modern twist, while the unparalleled legacy of Michael Jackson underscores the importance of innovation and showmanship. My love for classics like Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Rush, and The Police continues to influence my style, teaching me the value of lyrical depth, musical complexity, and enduring appeal. My diverse influences form a cohesive foundation, fueling my passion for crafting unforgettable music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing, Mastering, Co-Production, and Production work. I have clients that want a mix and master at first, but then I assist them with additional production to take their tracks to the next level.
