Interview with Jake H Brown
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Best of both worlds! I like to say that the digitalisation of the music industry is the best and worst thing to happen!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would say being communicative is most important, keeping an open mind and allow your song to change or adapt will often lead to the best results. We can always go back to the original ideas if we decide the new ideas are not that brilliant.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I like keeping things simple and tidy. One thing that I always try and keep in mind is to put the bands style and sound in the foreground as my style automatically seeps into the music by the decisions I make during recording and mixing.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would absolutely love to be in the studio with bands who made it back in the 80s or 90s such as Green Day or Foo Fighters as they made great records on tape. I wanna basically hear the raw recordings these guys lay down on tape (or rather the DAW these days) and hear the magic before anyones mixed or mastered anything. Of course I'd also love to see what, if anything, I could bring to the table and enhance the songs they write. That's just me being a fan though!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Overall, keep it simple. For example.... Don't do too much processing!! Less is more.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: In general I work on guitar-based music but mostly I live in the rocky and punky genres. But I am obviously open to try new things and incorporate different music styles in one, mixing and matching is always the most interesting aspect as there aren't any rules we have to follow!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: One of my favourite things to do is to listen to a song that someone has written hen it only has the basic structure and figure out what the song needs to make it the best it can be. If thats incorporating breaks, accents and weird & wonderful things the song before recording or enhancing parts of songs with additional backing vocals or sounds while recording or even mixing. I always try and make the song as good as it can possibly be... if its adding or subtracting elements.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I track almost everything in my studio in West London on a DDA D-Series 32:8:2 console with a nice variety of mics ranging from Neumann to Shure to AKG. The console is hooked up to Pro Tools via UAD's Apollo 16 converters. It's a super cozy studio with great sounding drums set up in an amazing sounding wee live room, it can capture the sound of a band really well. My usual space for mixing is in my home studio as I mostly mix in the box while emulating a console, using Beyerdynamics DT 990 pro's and Steven Slate VSX I can create an ideal mixing environment where I feel super comfortable and get great results!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: For bands I'm a huuuge fan of the Beatles, Green Day, Foo Fighters, McFly, I Prevail, Beartooth, Olivia Rodrigo, Fountains of Wayne to name a few. If it's a hefty breakdown or a brilliant melody.... I just love a good song! When it comes to engineers and producers, I often feel inspired by Warren Huart's wise words and of course CLA has mixed most of my favourite albums!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: It really depends on the client but my main area is recording and mixing artists. More often than not I bring a lot of ideas to the table once the song is written to enhance their vision before or during the recording stage.
