Authentic baritone vocals with grit, warmth, and a storytelling-first approach. I work primarily in folk, rock, pop, and Americana-leaning styles, but I’m comfortable adapting my voice to suit anything from intimate acoustic songs to fuller, modern productions.
My strength lies in serving the song — not over-singing it. I specialise in performances that feel honest, grounded, and lived-in, whether that means a close, conversational lead vocal or supportive, well-blended backing harmonies. Slight grit, texture, and character come naturally to my voice when the song calls for it.
I record from my home studio using a Rode NT1 condenser microphone through an Audient interface into Pro Tools, ensuring clean, professional-quality vocal tracks that are easy to drop straight into your mix.
What I Offer:
• Lead Vocals – Warm baritone delivery with control, emotion, and clarity
• Backing Vocals & Harmonies – Tasteful layers that support without clutter
• Style Adaptation – Folk, rock, pop, singer-songwriter, Americana, and adjacent genres
• Clean, Well-Edited Files – Delivered on time and ready to use
Whether you’re a songwriter looking for a voice that can carry meaning, a producer needing reliable, musical vocals, or an artist wanting something that feels real rather than over-polished, I approach every project with care, communication, and respect

Interview with Dirk J J van der Merwe
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Jamie Cullum just to see the process through which he creates his songs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I not really a producer, but what I have read is, dont try and save a bad vocal with editing and plugins, rather redo the take.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I normally work on swing and jazz songs because my singing style lends itself to it most.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my pitch is one of my strong points.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a lot of emotion and feeling to a song and can also provide some good original harmonies if requested.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I will listen to the backing track a few times and to the guide track to get a feeling for the melody. After that I will read the words to see what emotional changes that might bring to the track. I do a few dry runs and then start recording. Once I have a number of good takes I will listen to it again and see if there are any mistakes that I might have missed and correct them with new takes. Once I am happy with the recording I will put some plugins over the vocals and export the combines mp3 and also the seperate dry vocal wav files and send them to the client. If I get any comments back I will try and correct them with the existing tracks. If it doesn't sound natural I will redo the take to make sure it sounds good!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a small setup since I only record vocals. I have a Audient MK11 audio interface which has an amazing preamp for vocals. I also have a Rode NT1 condenser mic and record all the tracks through Protools. In terms of plugins, I have some of the Valhalla plugins (reverb and delay) and Nectar 4 Elements. I only use the plugins to export a mp3 with slight edited vocals over the backing track to give the client an idea of what I had in mind, but always provide the dry vocals in wav format seperately.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I really love Jamie Cullum! His covers of contemporary music is incredible and evevry time I listen to it it makes me feel like making music!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I normally get sent a backing track with lyrics and a guide track which shows the preferred melody for the vocals. I then record the vocals and send it back to my clients in the format that they prefer, but generally that you be raw wav files.
