Producer, writer, synth programmer and multi-instrumentalist; credits include NAO, Young Franco, Franc Moody Joey Bada$$, Wilkinson, Ghostpoet, Kimbra, as well as playing bass for Quincy Jones, Pete Tong, Roisin Murphy, The Heritage Orchestra and more…

I started as a session bass player over 20 years ago after graduating from the Royal Academy of Music and gradually worked as an MD and programmer which led me to production. I like to bring my experience playing live and expert synth programming skills to records and have a well equipped studio with an extensive instrument, microphone and outboard selection, ATC monitors…and natural light!

Interview with John Calvert

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Just finished Two Another’s album “Suburbia” which is split into 4 four track EPs. I engineered all the vocals, took each song from demo to finished and mixed it. Love those guys!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Tracks with Clara La San, Camden Cox, Master Peace, Young Franco, ZINES and BCBC.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Get in touch and let’s chat!

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and got into session playing. Eventually my love of electronic (Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada) led me to learn programming/synths/Ableton, and I started working in MD roles that required creative use of technology to keep the electronic sound whilst not just sticking stuff on a backing track. This eventually led to production with NAO and Ghostpoet, including producing his Mercury-nominated album “Shedding Skin”. Since then I’ve been working as much as I can and loving learning all the time.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: A mish mash of pop, electronica, indie, house, hip hop…depends on the day!

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Remi Wolf is my favourite songwriter at the moment! Her voice is insane too.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Stop looking at your computer and walk around the room. Bounce the song and walk around your neighbourhood listening on headphones.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Electronic alternative pop is probably the best way to describe what I work on most…but really my strength is diversification.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Musicianship.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: My experience with live music is an increasingly rare skill set, which can introduce lots of facets that bedroom producers might not be able to. Fresh ears that are highly experienced are a great thing to bring to any musical process.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Talking with clients about what they want is the most important beginning, to make sure we set out on the right path. As much as my experience is a useful tool, working with someone who’s fresh and green is an amazing energy that I will always try and tap into.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: Ableton Live is at the heart of everything, but I have designed the setup so sources can be patched out to hardware/analog world to take advantage of all those flavours. I like it to be as quick as possible to get some tape delay and spring reverb from the RE301, gooey compression from the TG-1, or noisy lofi cassette grit that just sounds better(/worse?!) than any software can. But I’m also a massive nerd for plugins and do my best to keep up with new things to inspire fresh ideas.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Recently: Remi Wolf, Anderson Paak, Fred Again, Jeff Bhasker, Ian Kirkpatrick, Tame Impala, Barry Can’t Swim, Rob Milton, Glass Animals…

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Turning demos into finished records is a big part of my life, but so is writing, and contributing instruments/sound design and ideas. Collaboration is key!
