Interview with Hudson Smith
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is balancing technical precision with creative intuition. I have a keen ear for detail, which helps me shape a track sonically, ensuring everything is polished, cohesive, and dynamic. But I also have a strong creative instinct when it comes to arrangement, sound design, and making artistic choices that enhance the emotional impact of a song. Whether it’s adjusting a vocal’s tone, adding subtle textures to a mix, or making a seemingly small production decision that changes the entire feel of the song, I’m able to combine both the technical and the artistic elements seamlessly. I’m also adaptable—being able to work across multiple genres, from raw rock energy to delicate folk, and bringing a unique touch to each one.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process is a blend of organization, creativity, and collaboration. Here’s a breakdown of how I usually approach a project: Pre-Production/Planning: Before diving into recording or mixing, I like to sit down with the artist and discuss their vision. This involves understanding the overall feel of the project, the reference tracks they have in mind, and any specific goals they want to achieve. If we're producing, this is where we talk about song structures, instrumentation, and arrangements. I often create a roadmap or a “game plan” for how the project will unfold. Tracking/Recording: If we're in the recording phase, I focus on capturing the best performances possible. I make sure the environment is comfortable for the artist and that we have a solid plan for tracking. This could involve recording instruments live together or layering them one by one, depending on the style of the project. I’ll often experiment with mic placement and different takes to ensure we get the right vibe. Production & Arrangement: If I’m producing, I’ll work on arrangements and instrumentation. Sometimes the vision calls for a stripped-down arrangement, and other times we might add layers to create a fuller sound. I always strive to keep the song’s core emotion intact, so I don’t add unnecessary elements unless they enhance the track. This is also when we might start discussing textures, effects, and tonal choices that can elevate the song. Mixing: Once the recordings are done, I move into mixing. I start by organizing the session, then balancing the levels and ensuring the track has good dynamics. I carefully EQ each element, carving out space for each instrument, and applying effects like reverb, delay, or compression to create movement and depth. I pay close attention to the song’s flow and pacing, making sure the mix builds and recedes in the right places. I also focus on the emotional tone—whether the mix should feel intimate, energetic, or atmospheric. Feedback & Revisions: I believe the mix process is collaborative, so I always loop the artist in for feedback after the initial pass. I encourage open communication and welcome suggestions or changes. Mixing is often an iterative process, so I may make adjustments based on the artist’s feedback until we land on the final version. Mastering & Delivery: Finally, once the mix is locked in, I’ll either send the track off for mastering or, if we’re handling it ourselves, I’ll apply the finishing touches—getting the track to a level that sounds great on all playback systems. After mastering, I deliver the final tracks in the requested format, whether it’s for streaming, CD, or vinyl. With this said, it can range from project to project.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Studio Setup: I work out of a home studio that’s been carefully designed to provide both a comfortable and professional environment. The setup is optimized for both creativity and technical precision, with a focus on delivering high-quality results no matter the project. DAW & Software: I use Ableton Live as my primary DAW. It’s incredibly versatile for both production and mixing, allowing me to work quickly and intuitively while offering all the tools I need to shape a track, experiment with sounds, and execute precise edits. Ableton's flexibility in handling different genres—whether it’s rock, indie, folk, or alternative—makes it my go-to for all kinds of projects. Acoustics & Monitoring: Since I work from home, creating an acoustically accurate space was a top priority. My studio has been treated with proper acoustic panels and bass traps to reduce reflections and ensure a balanced sound. This setup helps me make critical decisions while mixing, ensuring the track translates well across all playback systems. Outboard Gear & Instruments: While I do most of my work in the digital realm, I also have some analog gear to add warmth and depth to my mixes. This includes a selection of microphones, preamps, and a few key pieces of outboard equipment that I use when I want to capture something special or add that "vintage" character to certain tracks. Additionally, I keep a collection of instruments around—guitars, bass, keys, and a few other instruments—so I can easily jump in if an arrangement needs a live touch or if I want to add a unique texture to a song. This setup allows me to work efficiently, whether I'm crafting a new song from the ground up or refining a final mix. It’s all about ensuring the artist’s vision comes through clearly, with all the sonic elements sitting right where they need to be. Let me know if you need more specific details or want to add anything else!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m particularly proud of was an indie folk album I worked on a few years ago. The artist had a very clear vision but didn’t know exactly how to translate it sonically. My role was to produce and mix the album, and I worked closely with the artist to create the atmosphere she wanted while maintaining a raw, organic sound. We used a lot of live recordings to capture the intimacy of her music. I’m proud of how the album turned out because it feels authentic and has a timeless quality to it — the mix feels warm and emotional but still polished. It was one of those projects where the collaboration was seamless, and the final product felt true to the artist’s vision.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently, I’m working on an indie rock album for a band that blends a bit of folk influence with more modern, atmospheric rock elements. We’re finalizing the mix and refining the details to make sure every song shines in its own way. The project has been a lot of fun to work on because the band has a very clear vision of their sound, and we’ve been experimenting with different textures and arrangements to give each track its own unique character.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I don't currently know anyone else on SoundBetter
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I would say both, I love analog for its warmth, depth, and natural character. There’s a certain richness to analog gear, especially when it comes to capturing instruments or vocals. It can add a unique texture and smoothness to a track that’s hard to replicate with digital tools. I often use analog equipment for things like tape saturation, tube preamps, and EQ to bring out a more organic, vintage feel. Digital is essential for precision, flexibility, and modern production. It’s where most of the magic happens in terms of editing, arranging, and mixing. The range of plugins and virtual instruments available in digital production is endless, and it allows me to achieve perfect mixes and high-quality sound within tight time constraints. I rely on digital tools for mixing, automation, and overall workflow efficiency. In short, I use both. Analog for warmth and character, digital for precision and flexibility. Both are essential tools, and I blend them to get the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to treat your music with care, respect, and attention to detail. I’ll work collaboratively with you to ensure your sound is polished and true to your vision, and I’ll be dedicated to bringing out the best in your project, whether we’re recording, producing, or mixing. I’ll always be open to your feedback and committed to creating a final product that both of us are proud of.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most is the creative aspect — taking a song and transforming it into something that sounds polished, cohesive, and impactful. I love being part of the process of bringing an artist’s vision to life, whether it’s through experimenting with sounds, enhancing emotion in a track, or capturing that perfect vibe. The ability to help someone else’s art shine is incredibly fulfilling.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long will the project take? It really depends on the complexity of the music and the scope of the project. For a single song, it might take a few days to a week to mix, but for an album, it could take several weeks or even months. Can you make my song sound like X artist? While I can certainly draw influence from artists and styles you like, the goal is to make your music sound like you. It’s about finding your unique sound and enhancing that. What’s your process like? I like to start with a conversation about your vision, then move into recording and arranging if needed. From there, I focus on mixing, balancing everything, and making sure it’s as cohesive as possible. It’s a collaborative process throughout, with plenty of room for input.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A common misconception is that the producer or mixing engineer's job is just about pressing buttons or using fancy equipment. In reality, it’s about understanding the song’s essence, the artist’s vision, and knowing how to enhance that with the right technical skills. A great mix is more about intuition and feel than just technical knowledge — it’s about bringing out the heart of the song in the most authentic way possible.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually start by asking about their goals for the project: What’s the overall vision or vibe you want to achieve with this track or album? Are there specific influences or reference tracks you have in mind? What’s the timeline for the project, and do you have a budget in mind? What is your process like for writing and arranging songs? Do you prefer to work independently or collaborate in the studio? Are there any particular technical preferences you have (mixing styles, instrumentation, etc.)? These questions help me understand not just the technical side of the project but also the artistic direction, so we can align and bring your vision to life.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be to look for someone who not only has technical expertise but also understands and respects your creative vision. A great producer or engineer should be able to balance both sides of the equation: enhancing your sound while staying true to the heart of your music. Make sure you feel comfortable communicating your ideas and goals with them. It's important to work with someone who listens as much as they create.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. Acoustic guitar – Great for songwriting and playing in solitude. 2. High-quality microphone – To capture the sounds around me or record my voice. 3. Portable audio interface – So I can record and mix my ideas. 4. Laptop with DAW software – To edit, produce, and work on tracks. 5. Headphones – Essential for mixing and listening in any environment.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been working as a producer and mixing engineer for over 7 years, and my journey has been a mix of self-taught skills and professional experience. I started out by working on local indie bands, learning the ropes of recording and mixing, and gradually expanded my expertise across multiple genres. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with a diverse range of artists, which has helped me refine my skills and broaden my musical perspective.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a blend of technical precision and creative exploration. I focus on capturing the essence of a song while bringing out its best qualities. Whether it’s adding subtle textures or enhancing dynamics, I aim to create mixes that feel both polished and authentic. My style is rooted in a love for rock, indie, folk, and alternative music, but I’m always open to experimenting and evolving as a producer.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Radiohead. Their ability to innovate and push musical boundaries is truly inspiring. As a producer, working with them would be an incredible opportunity to explore new sonic landscapes and experiment with unconventional approaches to sound. Their music blends emotional depth with technical complexity, which aligns with my own approach to production.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One tip I always give is to keep the balance of elements in mind. It’s easy to get caught up in making every instrument sound perfect, but sometimes less is more. Focus on clarity and space in your mix, and make sure each element has room to breathe. Don’t be afraid to leave certain parts of the track simpler or quieter if it serves the song—sometimes space and minimalism can create a much more powerful impact than overwhelming the listener with layers.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I specialize in rock, indie, folk, and alternative music. These genres allow me to blend my love for live energy with a polished, refined sound. I’m drawn to projects that have a strong sense of artistry, whether it’s an energetic rock anthem or a stripped-down folk ballad. I enjoy the creative challenges these genres offer and the chance to work with artists who are exploring new sonic territories.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a balance of technical expertise and creative intuition. I approach every project with an open mind, ensuring the song’s authenticity shines through. Whether it’s through tight arrangements, thoughtful instrumentation, or the perfect mix, I aim to elevate the core essence of the song. My goal is to make each element stand out while maintaining the overall integrity and emotional impact of the track.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who blend genres, push boundaries, and have a keen sense of both musicality and technical mastery. I’m particularly influenced by producers like Rick Rubin, who has worked across rock, indie, and alternative genres, as well as the work of engineers like Tchad Blake and Steve Albini, who are known for capturing raw energy in their mixes. I also draw inspiration from bands that have a strong sense of identity and authenticity, like Radiohead, The War on Drugs, and Fleet Foxes.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I work primarily on producing and mixing music, tailoring each project to match the artist’s creative vision. My work involves a blend of technical precision and artistic intuition, helping clients capture the right energy, polish their sound, and bring out the best in their recordings. Whether it’s a rough demo, a live recording, or a studio track, I focus on refining the overall sound, balancing instruments, and ensuring every element of the song is cohesive and stands out.
