Christopher Martsolf on SoundBetter

My goal is to deliver a clean, clear sounding mix, host open communication, and to make sure my take on your music matches your vision. I also promise quick delivery times, and as much revision that is needed. I'd love to hear about your project! Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

I have over 10 years of mixing and production experience, working with clients from many different genres, focused on Indie, Rock, Pop, Rap, Electronic, House, and Acoustic Singer/Songwriter. I love to connect with artists and get to know their background, influences, and goals in order to create a unique musical collaboration between us!

I think its important for a mixing engineer/producer to have broad musical experience, which is something I think sets me apart from the rest. I have a music degree from UC Santa Cruz in performance, and as a musician I play multiple instruments, including Drums, Piano, Guitar, Bass, and Trumpet. I also work as a music teacher, and love to share my knowledge with anyone interested in learning more about Recording, Producing, Mixing, playing instruments, or music theory!

I also offer Beatmaking, live drum recording, vocal tuning and cleaning (pops, sibilance, noise etc.) if needed. Contact me for pricing. Thank you!

Interview with Christopher Martsolf

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I bring innate musicality to every song as I have years of musical experience from a young age, and am capable of working across many different genres, and blending them if needed. I have a strong desire to provide the best possible product and won't be satisfied until its complete and approved by the client with enthusiasm!

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: I always start with getting to know the artist, doing a video consultation if they like to find out their musical tastes, experiences, influences, and goals with their music. Then I listen to the rough mix and take notes on the things that need to be emphasized or tamed back, to ensure I'm maintaining the right focus throughout a song. I will then go through and do any corrective EQ, apply compression where needed, and clean up the tracks in regards to noise or unwanted frequencies. This step ensures each track will be crisp, balanced, dynamic, but also controlled. I then move on to adding any necessary effects like reverb, delay, saturation or distortion to help fill out the mix and make it sound alive. The final step in the mix process is the tonal balance between right and left channels, balancing volume between tracks, and making sure the vocals are up front and present. This prepares the song to be at a level which is ready to be mastered. I usually like to sleep on this step as the next day refreshes my ears, and I can make any last minute adjustments. 6. At this point I send it off to be reviewed by the client, wait for their feedback, and then we go back and forth until they are completely satisfied with the product!

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I do everything through a Mac and Apollo Interface, alongside Yamaha Monitors and Beyerdynamic headphones. I have a collection of instruments (Acoustic and Electric Drums, Piano, Guitar and Bass) and many microphones to capture any audio source. My room is also acoustically treated to be able to produce the best sounding tracks!

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: I am inspired by the many hard working and kind people in this industry who just want to make good music, and help foster a community of artists working together to create something great!

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: I am usually involved in the production and mixing process in creating a song, to make sure we have enough space for all instruments and vocal parts. By working with the songwriter or vocalist in this process, it helps bring the song to life.
