Interview with Kenneth Westbroek
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I value both analog and digital tools for their unique strengths. Analog gear provides warmth and character, while digital tools offer precision and flexibility. Using both allows me to combine depth and accuracy for the best possible mix.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to clients is unlimited revisions. I’m committed to ensuring that every mix meets your vision and expectations perfectly. We’ll work together until you’re completely satisfied with the final result.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask prospective clients about their vision for the track, including their desired sound, style, and any specific elements they want to highlight. I also inquire about their target audience and any references or examples they have in mind. This helps me understand their goals and ensures the final mix aligns with their expectations.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mainly work on a range of dance genres, from house and techno to harder styles like hardstyle, dubstep, and trap. My goal is to capture the energy and intensity that these genres demand, ensuring the beats hit hard and the sound is immersive, whether it’s for a festival anthem or a bass-heavy club track.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with a mix of high-end analog gear and cutting-edge digital tools, which allows me to achieve a perfect balance of warmth and clarity in my mixes. The room is acoustically treated for accurate monitoring, and I use top-quality monitors to ensure a true representation of the sound. This setup helps me craft mixes with a wide stereo image, dynamic movement, and powerful transients, making sure every track sounds exactly as it should.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by engineers like Eric J Dubowsky and Jaycen Joshua. Their ability to create mixes that are both sonically rich and emotionally powerful has greatly influenced my approach, reminding me to balance technical skill with feeling in every project.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do for clients is mixing their tracks to create a polished, cohesive sound. I focus on enhancing the stereo image, maintaining dynamic movement, and ensuring the vocals and drums retain their impact. My goal is to bring out the energy and emotion in each track, making sure it resonates with listeners exactly as the artist intended.
