Music is my religion. It is not a job, it is a lifestyle.
I'm classically trained from age 6, graduated with Bachelor and Master degrees in Music (Violin Performance) as well as a Grad Certificate in Early Music from the Thornton School of Music at USC (University of Southern CA).
After freelancing in LA for 11+ years, touring with classical crossover electric ensembles, and recording in world-renowned studios (Capitol, East West, Sony), I moved to Las Vegas to perform headlining residency shows with multiple artists (Aerosmith, Journey, Richard Marx), while also recording / arranging strings out of my own studio and focusing on my passion project, The Violution.
While violin is my main instrument, I studied viola as well, and am proficient in reading and writing treble, alto and bass clefs, which allows me to record and arrange from a single instrument to a full string orchestra.
My specialty is laying down electric violin solos in place of guitar solos utilizing my amp modeler of choice, the Fractal Axe-FX III (my highlight reel features an electric violin solo from a cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" also with rhythm electric violins, electric bass and drums).
I have a recording studio and engineer in house delivering professional quality music stems via Pro Tools HD and various mic'ing techniques depending on the nature of the project.

Jlynn walked into my first studio in LA in 2009. I was intrigued and pleased to witness the level of detail she invests into her musical endeavors. She writes the best charts I have ever seen and offers one of the highest and most professional production value to anything I have ever produced.
I seen her go on tour with Adele, Bocelli, to performing at the Disney Music Hall in Los Angeles, to rocking out with Aerosmith and Journey (whom she has contracted a 24 piece orchestra for). I was sold then, and I’m sold today. Jlynn is a guarantee in the world of string productions, music and life. 💯

Interview with String Scoring & Production

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: John Spicer "Crossing Over" (Country) Recorded at Mothership Studio, Hollywood, CA Produced by Tom Fletcher & Patrick Caccia. I provided all string arrangements and recorded all the strings (violin, viola and cello) in addition to transcribing chord charts, lead sheets and lyrics. I'm especially proud of my work on this project because it was the first time I contributed to another artist's album having recorded all the strings myself, with a few titles having up to 60 string tracks.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently preparing my own live show "The Violution: Heroines & Heroes" and studio recordings for various artists.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm new :) I have yet to discover who is on the platform.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Analog for acoustic and digital for electric.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To serve the music.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I do what I love.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: Can you play a guitar solo on your electric violin? A: Yes please!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Music is my lifestyle and not a hobby.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Who is the artist and what is the use for the track (personal / label / commercial, etc)? Are there charts or do you need an arrangement? Single instrument or string section?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Communication is key to every successful delivery. Often the cheapest options end up being the most costly and unfulfilling. Lastly, check egos at the door and serve the music.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My violin, my Fractal Axe-FX III, a laptop, a microphone and an audio interface to keep recording for my SoundBetter clients (in addition to all the cables, strings, etc. that would also be necessary!)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I didn't have a career path, per se. I started playing the violin at six years of age because I thought it would be fun, and it was. I'm still doing it decades later and now it is my profession. Lucky me!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: If the juxtaposition of a female classical violinist with hard rock and heavy metal music seems too good to be true, chances are we haven't yet met. Hi, my name is JLynn and I play the violin. :)

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Good question. I discovered Raye lately and she has a pure authenticity to the music. In addition to just nailing what she sings and expressing everything she feels, that makes me want to work with her. On the other end of the spectrum, Steve Vai, well-known electric rock guitarist, is a huge inspiration. He plays so effortlessly and his approach to music is almost spiritual, in a way, and I resonate with that.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: I got two for you. First take is usually the best one! And trust your instincts, always.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Good music ;) Jokes aside, all kinds of genres, from classical to country to pop and rock and this might surprise you, but I love heavy metal and I play my electric violin like a guitar! Check out www.itsnotaguitar.com

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Playing my instrument.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: First and foremost, I bring my love for and dedication to the music. Additionally, I also bring more than three decades of honing my skills as a musician, two decades of recording experience from prestigious studios to mastering the craft of audio engineering in a home studio and ten years of personally recording and co-producing my own works. When arranging or orchestrating is desired, I bring my own voice guided by the client's vision. I work in tandem with my producer, mixer and audio engineer which guarantees the highest quality and professional delivery as expected.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I receive the music files and/or charts, if available, import said files into Pro Tools HD, learn the music and then record multiple passes with close and room mics (or if on electric, with multiple outputs), then comp a full performance from the best takes. Bounce the final comp and then deliver high quality wav files to the client. Receive client's feedback and, if any revisions are desired, then attend to those until the song is served.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I record acoustic strings with close and/or room mics in an airy room with wood floors and 20 foot ceilings for natural reverb. When recording with my electric violins I utilize a Fractal Axe-FX III for a signature and unique sound. I can include a DI, a dry and wet signal depending on what is desired.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Any and everyone that pursues music as a profession is inspiring to me.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: In addition to performing live, I record strings (violin, viola and cello) for all kinds of media. Sometimes I receive written charts but many times I come up with my own arrangements while recording live. Lately I've been adding electric violin solos to rock songs, either in place of or along with guitar solos.
