Interview with Connor Debreczy
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I've recently worked on a project that deeply resonated with me because of its lyrics, overall essence, and message. In this project, I contributed as the top-liner and guitarist."
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on a song that strongly communicates the theme of protecting the Earth, and I'm really proud of it.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. There is no better or worse really. It depends on the context and what you want. To me digital is more efficient and analog has the sound I've grown up on. I truly believe that blending the two is the best solution, actually. Just look at Jack Antonoff. He blends analog with digital and there's magic.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To make sure I understand their vision and what they want. So that we can nail it right on the first try.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Everything:) Working as a top-liner and session guitarist isn't just a job for me; it's my passion. Sometimes it's hard, difficult and exhausting, but I'd never do anything else. However, I love the creation process, meeting with other artists and songwriters. I love creating music and collaborating with new artists, songwriters, and producers. Collaborating together and hopefully adding something cool to the world with our music.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: When can I have the tracks back? My answer? By the agreed deadline. How many stages of revision do I get? Answer: 2.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people think that creating music is simply a matter of inspiration striking and that the process is always enjoyable and straightforward. In reality, the music creation process involves a lot of hard work, dedication, and sometimes grueling hours. It requires technical skill, creativity, and the ability to handle criticism and rejection. Therefore, musicians shouldn't settle for exposure in place of a livable wage. This isn't just a side hobby for us—it's our livelihood. We've simply had the courage to pursue our passion as a career and deserve fair compensation for our work.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Can you provide some professionally released songs that inspire the style of your song? What is your vision and goal with the song? What are you aiming to achieve? What's your deadline for this project? Would you like me to arrange some harmonies and come up with ad-libs?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Explore my music on the sample track and drop me a message to start a conversation! I'm a cool guy;) There’s no pressure to decide on working together right away. My goal is to help you find the ideal sound for your project. If it turns out I’m not the best match, I’ll happily refer you to a trusted person who might be a better fit.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Acoustic guitar, MacbookPro, Interface, Microphone, External hard drive
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been dealing with music for 18 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My sound blends elements of pop, indie pop, rock, and alternative, incorporating instruments such as guitar, modern synth sounds, and a touch of electronic music. I’m a storyteller, I mostly sing about real life experiences, or my vision of contemporary culture. I wanna start converstations, I wanna make culture.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Finneas because I really like his style of production. It's so simple yet very smart. I'm also a big fan of alternative and indie music, and his projects have that kind of feel for me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: After you're happy with the sound, always commit MIDI to audio. You don’t want the flexibility to go back and tweak your sound constantly. Otherwise, every time you open the project, you'll likely make another tweak and never finish the product.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock and pop music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Writing melodies and playing the guitar.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I always try to bring a unique touch to a song, offering catchy and memorable melodies combined with my own sound and creativity. Depending on the project, I make your song sound like it belongs on the radio or commercial. As a guitarist, it is the same. I aim to deliver unique lines, great sound, timing, and feel.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First, I listen carefully to the client's needs. If they have any specific sound or style they want to achieve, I immerse myself in that and ensure I know exactly what to do. Then, I start creating music. It's such a flow state really. When writing top-lines, I typically begin with the melody while simultaneously mumbling the lyrics. Writing lyrics and melodies usually happens simultaneously for me. When I record or write guitar parts, the process is similar. I record a few takes, comping as I go, editing as I go, adjusting fx as I go from inside the booth. I also always leave a day to revise the work I did and make sure I nailed it the way I wanted it.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have an Apogee AD-16X audio interface and a DA-16X converter. For my top-line recordings, I use an SM7B microphone with a DBX 376 Tube Channel Strip. The DAW I use is Logic, and I use a tons of plugins, including Waves, Soundtoys, UAD, Slate, Melodyne, and Auto-Tune Pro 11, just to name a few. I also make sure to use the best high performance cables.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Magnus Skylstad, Dan Nigro, Finneas, Jack Antonoff, Numen Studios, Aurora, Beatles, Nirvana, and the list goes on.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily focus on guitar production and top-liner work.
