Interview with Sebastian Pulido

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: We follow a collaborative and transparent approach in every project to ensure the best results for your music. Initially, we discuss your artistic vision, the sound you are aiming for, and the specifics of your project. Then, based on your feedback, we proceed with editing, mixing, and mastering, always focusing on maintaining the highest sound quality while respecting your creative direction. In mixing, I receive audio stems and, optionally, MIDI files for virtual instruments. The mixing process includes manual vocal tuning with Melodyne or Auto-Tune, audio editing and quantization, and professional mixing using advanced techniques and state-of-the-art equipment. The focus is on enhancing the sound with a wide stereo image, creative sonic elements, and precise tonal and frequency balance, ensuring clarity and optimal translation across all playback systems. For mastering, I work with a WAV audio file in 24/32-bit format at 44.1/48 kHz. The process focuses on preserving dynamics and tonal balance using advanced techniques such as EQ, glue compression, multiband compression, de-essing, clipping, and limiting. These tools ensure competitive loudness while optimizing stereo imaging and clarity without sacrificing the mix’s energy or introducing distortion. The final delivery is tailored to the producer’s needs, but formats such as 24-bit WAV at 44.1/48 kHz are recommended for optimal compatibility with streaming platforms, CDs, and vinyl records.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Studio time, remote mixing and mastering.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital: Super enjoyable workflow, easy setup, and great flexibility, with an imperceptible difference from "the real thing". That makes for a clear, efficient, and precise result.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: Quality Guarantee: A clean three-dimensional sound, stereophonic openness, power, and clarity.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: The simple fact that my job is to listen to music all day and make it sound the best possible for the enjoyment of listeners.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: In mastering, we can only work with the track as a whole. Any errors made during recording or mixing can be fixed very subtly; however, in mastering, our focus is on ensuring a good frequency balance, punch, clarity, stereo image, and competitive loudness. This final step involves enhancing the overall sound to make sure it translates well across different listening systems while maintaining the integrity of the original mix.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
