Acoustic Drum Tracks for Your Song

Hi, I'm Jeff Donaldson. I have been bringing energy and groove to the drums since 1995. I am the current drummer for Bridge of Hope Church and The Touchables, as well as an in-demand freelance drummer.

My extensive performance experience includes drumming with the acclaimed Jay Jesse Johnson Band, where I played at major festivals and venues across the Midwest. My drumming can be heard on the band’s albums Set the Blues on Fire, Down the Hard Road, and Man on a Mission.

I have also performed in the pit orchestra at Jenny Wiley Theatre, providing drums and percussion for productions such as A Chorus Line, West Side Story, High School Musical, and The Wizard of Oz.

Here’s what you can expect when you work with me:

Song-First Approach: I’ll play the part that enhances your song, not my ego.

Fast Turnaround: I’ll record and send you the first take within 24 hours.

Multiple Revisions: My service includes up to 3 revisions based on your feedback.

Pro Quality Sound: I use Yamaha drums, recorded with high-end mics from Shure, Sennheiser, Rode, and Oktava.

Let’s work together to create the beat your music deserves. Send me your track, share your ideas, and I’ll bring your rhythm to life—quickly, and professionally.

Jeff has been a great drummer to work with. Played the track just how I liked it, whilst also adding his own creative input that fitted the style of the song perfectly.

Very quick turn around, sending recordings promptly and responds to messages fast.

    Talented drummer, highly recommend.

Interview with Jeff Donaldson

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Start with good drum sounds. It's less work to mix good sounds than to try to make bad sounds good.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That a drum machine can replace me. A lot of people prefer the sound of a human drummer, and I get asked to replace programmed drums quite a lot.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: I mostly ask about what style they are looking for from the drums. Do you want it busy, sparse? Are there any rests or breakdowns you would like, that sort of thing.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I'd like to work with anyone who is willing to work with me. I don't care who it is, I just want to create great music.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I'm really inspired by many drummers. Carter Beauford, David Garibaldi, Steve Gadd, Nate Smith, and many more. I prefer drummers that keep a great pocket.

  11. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  12. A: One that I'm especially proud of was an album for a local musician. I was the drummer on that production. We laid down the drum tracks in two separate sessions. What I'm really proud of with that was that most of those tracks took one take, because I had been able to practice and craft great drum parts for them. I spent a lot of time listening to the artists he was trying to emulate, and capture that style with each song. I like to take that approach with each song that I work on.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Using digital interfaces currently. They seem to work pretty well, and I'm getting clean sounds with them.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: Flint and Steel, Knife, Hatchet, Rope, and Beer.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: I will get you clean drum tracks to mix with your song in a timely manner. I will be open to feedback, and am not happy with the drum parts until you are.

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: I love the challenge of playing to new and interesting songs, and trying to create drum parts that fit those songs.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have been playing drums for over 30 years. I studied percussion at Morehead State. I have played in a variety of groups, including musical theatre pits, rock bands, and jazz combos.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Groove oriented. Whatever fits the song is what I play.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: I usually work on rock, and blues. I am able to play a variety of styles, and am open to all types of music.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Drumming.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: Good groove, tasteful fills, and a good sense of what drum parts will fit without getting in the way of the other instruments.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: First, I like to listen to the song that I'm playing to. Once I've got it in my head, I like to sit down and practice it a bit without recording at first, so I can play with some different ideas. Once I've got a good feel for the song, I'll record a take, and listen back. I might record a few takes before I send out a rough draft that I am happy with. From there, I do up to 3 retakes, and send off the raw WAVs. I send out the first take within a day. I stay on top of doing retakes in a timely manner. A song can take as little as a day if you are happy with the first take. Typically, I get the project done in a couple of days.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I use Yamaha drums, and Zildjian cymbals. I use ten inputs: kick inside and out, snare top and bottom, 2 overheads, ride, hi hat, rack, and floor tom. I use Studio One, a PreSonus 1818, and a PreSonus Digimax D8. I also run through Cloudlifter preamp.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: I record acoustic drum tracks for my clients. A lot of times, I am replacing a programmed drum part. Sometimes, I am creating a part from scratch.
