Interview with Brickwall records
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: BOTH !
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I would never botch a single mix
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Come on ! For the moment I'm cheaper than other here !
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: EHRLUND EHR-M mic TRINNOV NOVA HEDD 20/30 SPeakers ANTELOPE DISCRETE 4 ( no need more )
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been mixing professionally for almost 15 years and teach mixing and sound engineering at many professional training centers.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Simple !
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If I had to choose one artist ( living ) it would be John Mayer, in the style of his Paradise Valley album. But really, I enjoy all artists who have something to say in their songs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: as I said above: “Mix with your ears and not with your eyes!”
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work in almost every style except metal, because I don't have the codes for that style. But I'm most at ease with acoustic music, pop and blues, in the style of John Mayer, Ray Lamontagne, Lucky Perterson etc...
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My best skill is to reproduce the workflow of the old mixing consoles. It's not just the “vintage grain” that I get out of it, but above all a certain approach to mixing that gets straight to the point. You mix with your ears, not your eyes!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to bring what comes naturally to me, I don't try to copy what others do, I'm very bad at that. I try to force myself to just ask “Does this sound good or not?”
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First of all, I'll discuss the customer's request with them and make sure it's possible based on the leads they give me. Then I'll make sure to modify what's been done before as little as possible, just to bring out as much of the essence of the track as possible.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My audio setup is really a mix of what made the charm of the old full-analog studios and the flexibility of today's digital. For me, what a mixing and recording engineer needs is a very, very good AD/DA conversion and an optimized listening system. I'm lucky enough to work with ANTELOPE Audio, which gives me optimum conversion and maximum dynamics. To ensure the portability of my mixes, I use a TRINNOV NOVA on my HEDD 2.1 Speakers to correct the systemic acoustics of my control room. The rest of my equipment is really to add a certain coloration to my mixes, I mainly use an old TRIDENT serie 65 in a lot ( too much ) hardware compressor like Neve 33609, SSL GBus etc...
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The mixing engineer who inspires me most is undoubtedly Michael BRAEUR. In fact, I've reproduced as much of his workflow as possible in my studio, adapting it to my way of producing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of the time, I like to produce the tracks from recording to mixing with the artists, but of course I sometimes receive tracks to mix from artists all over the world.
