Interview with Nick Wilder
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently provided the beat for an episode of "On the Radar." Proud to be featured on such a big platform.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A personal compilation of songs I've produced for the artists I work with. And of course the usual mixes I get hired for.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Sergio Cortez
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog. I think the signal comes in warmer.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I always deliver to expectation. If not, money back guarantee.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I've been a musician for the better half of my life and I enjoy working on every aspect of it.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That presets work magic. While they can help in some instances, everyone's voice is different. Every track was recorded differently. The likelihood that I would use the exact same settings across the board is slim to none.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: The most important thing I always ask is what sound they're going for.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Come prepared with a few things. Know what you want and have a reference. Have your Pro Tools session files or a track out of your session ready to go.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook Pro, Interface, Push, Mic and OP1.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started out writing songs and recording myself. I got more into the production side and stuck with it. I've been doing this for about 18 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Unorthodox. Reminiscent of the old, but a fresh take.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Isaiah Rashad. He's my favorite artist. I relate to his music the most.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Use your ears. Break rules if you think it sounds good!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rap, HipHop, R&B
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Beat production for sure.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Flavor. A unique touch you won't find anywhere else.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends what I'm being hired for. If I'm mixing, I usually start with the vocals. Most artists only provide a two track of the beat. If I'm making a beat, I go sample digging until something grabs my ears. I'll build from there.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I make beats in Ableton and do all of my recording, mixing & mastering in Pro Tools.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I like artists/musicians who create unique grooves.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly produce beats for artists I work with. However, I do a good bit of mixing & mastering.
