Originally from Melbourne, now based in London, Max is a specialist in mixing and mastering dance music. Having lived in East London for the last 4 years, Max is heavily ingrained in the scene, deeply involved in club culture as a whole - combined with years of mixing and mastering experience, he’s developed a true understanding of what makes a great dance record from spending time in the clubs, hours on the dance floor and immersed at festivals for years. Max is also a jazz trained saxophonist with a finely tuned musical ear across genres and different types of music. Max is a close collaborator and go-to for labels such as Method 808 and Steel City Dance Discs, among others, building their trust to deliver hard-hitting mixes and clean masters with reliability and speed.

Interview with Max Dowling
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Fred Again.. 'USB002 REMIXES' Was thrilled recently to master some of the tracks off this immense record.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The best time to reference someone else's track is during production, not mixing. Tonal balance, density, intensity, stereo image, and all the most important musical elements come predominantly from composition and arrangement.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A combination of depth and breadth that many don't have. After studying jazz saxophone over a decade ago, I have worked in countless genres of music in many different roles. Yet I have settled into dance music as it's what I love most, and I'm an active patron of the scene.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: The best place to start a collaborative process is with communication. I always appreciate strong, clear communication to ensure I'm on the same page as those I'm working with and we can get the best out of the process - whether it's hands-on production, mastering, or anything in between.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I predominantly produce, finish, mix and master dance tracks for artists around the world.
