Interview with Tom Huergo
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Sometimes I think people don't realize that I'm also a professional producer as well.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Playing and being the musical director for Emilia has been one of the best jobs I've ever had. Not only do I share it with a beautiful group of people, but it has also allowed me to travel around the world and perform on incredible stages for tens of thousands of people.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm touring worldwide with Argentinean Pop Star Emilia Mernes.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! The only consideration is that It's all about the speed of delivery these days, so digital takes the lead.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You'll get what you expect.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Everything! Music has been my passion since I was a child. Having managed to build a career out of it makes me grateful for life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: If I can drop down the price for a project. I usually do that for first time clients.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you expecting from the guitars for this track? Is there any reference you have in mind?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: To have a clear vision of what they are looking for. A reference is wonderful so I could pin point the sound they are after.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Guitar, amplifier, computer, interface and Logic Pro.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing and producing music for 15 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Multi Genre.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The Rolling Stones.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't "fix it in the mix". Music needs to sound amazing before and cosmetic work is done to it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Pop and everything in between.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My greatest virtue is my professionalism and commitment when it comes to working.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: y approach from the guitar is to seek to give the song what it needs to elevate the composition. Of course, I also aim to give it a radio-friendly and commercial aspect. But always prioritizing the artistic concept.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I first discuss the genre and what you are looking for from the guitar portion. When possible, I encourage my clients to provide a reference to the type of style and sound desired. Depending on your preference, I can record a single guitar track or multiple guitar tracks to produce a richer sound or stereo sound. Tracks are then recorded remotely and sent directly to the client.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run Logic Pro X on a custom Mac. I use the Apogee Quartet as an interface. I have a Whirsperroom isolated booth to maximize mic'ed recording and isolation. I have a variety of amps such as Vox AC30, Fender Bassman and Marshall JMP 2061X Lead & Bass. Endless effects and pedals. I use microphones such as,AKGC414, Royer 121 and Shure sm57 and I always use the best high performance cables.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My main influences are: Rick Rubin, George Martin, Nile Rodgers, Quincy Jones, Butch Vig, Mark Ronson, Keith Richards, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Slash, Prince, Noel Gallagher, John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jack White, Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, etc
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I have several facets. On one hand, I work as a session guitarist and producer for various artists. Also, something I do quite frequently is work as a touring musician with mainstream artists from Argentina. Right now, I'm working with Emilia Mernes as her guitarist and musical director.
