Interview with Valdio

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: Singer Songwriter, Rock, Prog, Metal, Folk, Acoustic

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: I balance the level of all tracks, then tackle whatever bothers me the most about the current mix until the details become so small that the mix is almost done.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I work in the box using Reaper and high quality plug-ins. I use a couple of 6 inch KRK monitors in a well treated room, and also Sennheiser HD650 headphones powered by Apogee Groove.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Remote mixing with a quick turn-over at an affordable price.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Digital. Because the only benefit analog offers is saturation, but I can't control what type or how much. In digital I can always dial it back and since I use oversampling there is no aliasing whatsoever.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: If you are not happy with the results I return half your money back. I make adjustments until you are happy, but charge a bit extra after the 6th one.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Make sure the work is worth the price.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: Laptop, Reaper, Fab-Filter plug-in bundle, Sennheiser HD650 headphones, Drumset.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I graduated from SAE Miami in 2011 and since then I worked as a Live Sound Engineer and Recording Engineer. I took a long hiatus because I became a streamer, and now I'm specializing in Mixing.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: My mixes tend to have more dynamic range, I don't master with the intention of just being loud, the volume knob on the user's side takes care of that. I do not believe that a bad recording is automatically a bad mix, and I do my best to make everything sound as great as possible, while also constantly comparing my mix to the client's reference.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: Steven Wilson or Dan Worrall, because I would love to learn to mix as good as them.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: If you have 2 instruments fighting in the same frequency range, send both to an aux track, add a small delay (less than 35ms) on the aux channel and invert the polarity of one of the 2 tracks (only on the send), then adjust the delay time until it sounds good and not too colored. Finally, lower the volume of the aux track so there is no phase cancellation, but instead a series of boosts and cuts than complement each other (when one track is boosted at a certain frequency, the other gets a cut and viceversa). This usually works great for blending piano and guitars without frequency masking. You can also hi and low pass the aux channel so the boosts and notches are only in the frequency range you specify.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Mixing, Playing Bass and Drums.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: Quality creative processing. Being a musician myself I understand how important it is to get it right.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Steven Wilson, Neal Morse, Dan Worrall, Porcupine Tree, Gentle Giant, RUSH
