Anthony Rochester

Remote mixing for indie bands

Anthony Rochester on SoundBetter

I work with any kind of music but I think I excel in music that features more acoustic instruments and natural sounds. Indie-pop, indie-rock, indie-folk, folk, acoustic, jazz, or whatever really.

I'm a multi-instrumentalist and write/produce my own songs as well, so I have a lot of experience in every aspect of music production. I used to record bands a lot but I would like to focus more on just mixing and other remote production work. I can also master your work but I do not consider myself to be a specialised mastering engineer.

Interview with Anthony Rochester

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: You don't have to record with expensive gear, as long as your tracks are well recorded, well organised and easy for me to sync in my DAW it will be fine.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I started experimenting with song writing in 1997 with a cassette 4-track. I completed an audio engineering course at SAE in 2002. I was mostly working on my own music for a while and then started recording local bands intensely in 2006. In 2013 I got a "real job" in a pathology lab. It's good but I haven't had as much time for music production in recent years - I'm trying to make more time for it now.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: You can choose the best microphone and preamp for the track but it's much more important to write a good part and play it on the right instrument.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Indie-pop, indie-rock, folk, acoustic, jazz, etc

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I have a small amount of outboard gear that I use for tracking, but mixing is all in-the-box. I used to use ProTools but a little while ago I switched to Reaper. My room is pretty well acoustically treated, it sounds pretty tight and neutral. I have several guitars, drums, a few keyboards and various other instruments that I use in my own music.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: I've done plenty of live band tracking but currently focusing more on remote mixing.
