Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First I listen to the song and try to get the vibe. In the next step I am searching for the right sound to capture the right mood for the soundtrack. Ideally if there is sheet music provided I can start right away and I usually record the track and deliver it within 2-3 days. In case the composer has a vague idea about how the string part shall sound like I ask for sound samples to get an idea what the composer is looking for and I start putting my imagination to work :)
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I play an old Italian violin with which has a wide sound range from a very warm sound color to a brilliant tone. Additionally I also play a violin with Octave strings that sounds like a viola. This instruments allows me to play the lower registers without loosing sound clarity. The Oktava MK-012 mics along with a ZOOM H4N and a ART TPS II as Preamp capture the different sound colors perfectly.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Some of my all time favorite musicians are Janis Joplin, Ivry Gitlis and Miles Davis. What inspires me is the energy they had during their live performances which they could also transmit through the recordings.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Collaborating with music producers allows me to contribute and provide the extra boost to their song, film, commercial. I am recording strings from my studio with HQ mics. I am also frequently asked to record string sections from the upper to the lower strings and get that orchestra sound. Whether the composer has a concrete or a vague idea of the string parts, I like to listen to them and to bring their ideas into music.
