Interview with Jon Craig
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To be 100% dedicated to delivering the best possible end product I can, on time, and not missing deadlines. I am very passionate about what I do, so I will strive for the best a record can be just the same as the artist.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I assume I would have my computer system there already, if so... SSL G-Series, ATC SCM25A, Trinnov, Masalec MEA-2, Apogee Symphony I/O
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started out in my musical career as a DJ , around 7 years professionally, playing all across the UK & Ibiza. I feel this gave a great understanding of what people are looking for in a record, both in production & sonically. I started producing for myself around 2008, soon realising this is where I wanted to be, and have worked full time in commercial recording studios since 2011 working on music for clients.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Make sure the source sound is good. You will always fight a badly recorded sound / sample.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic music mainly, mostly house, commercial house in to pop, lots of trance music too. I get sent a ton of this to work on. I have been working on a bunch of Indie / Rock songs too recently.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say mixing & mastering. Being able to bring that fresh perspective without losing the original artists vibe from the demo mix.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I could talk about this for hours... I am a big believer in a hybrid mixing / mastering for the modern market. My SSL G-Series Mixing Console I would say is the most important part of analogue I have for mixing, it gets used on every mix I do. For mastering, my go to is my analogue Masalec MEA-2 EQ, I have only had this about 1 year, and do not know how I lived without it. Other essential equipment in the studio is: ATC SCM25A Monitors & flush mounted Adam S3X-H's, all being kept true with a Trinnov Room Optimisation Hardware Unit. My two 1176's, 1x original Urei & 1x clone (Purple Audio MC77). Maag EQ4's, Distressor, Pultec clone (Cartec Audio EQP-1A), Derr-Essers, Avalon vt-747sp and the list goes on... I have built up this kit slowly throughout my career over the last 15 years, and I feel it is all essential to the sound I get.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The majority of my work for clients is mixing and mastering. I do quite often produce for clients as thats what I started doing in the studio but, as I say, these days I'm mainly know as as a mixing and mastering engineer.
