Hey my name is Tyler Fogerty and I live in Topanga Canyon. I have been writing and making records since I was 16 years old. I've been recording my projects and bands in LA professionally since 2015. I have my own studio filled with classic vintage gear carefully crafted to suit my own tastes. I have a no compromises approach to record making and I love crafting sound with real instruments and gear. If you would like a more interesting and sonically pleasing record I am your guy! Interview with Tyler Fogerty

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The album I made with Brett Fromson I thought turned out sounding great. He recorded the whole thing at home and then brought me the tracks. He didn't have the best gear or much recording knowledge but after I mixed it you couldn't tell, and it sounded like a big production recorded at a world class studio.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on the next Hearty Har record, a new album for Travis Cacho, and will soon be starting a record with Windows.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Why limit yourself to one medium. Taking advantage of the good parts of both mediums makes the most sense to me.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: That your record will sound unique and full of life.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Getting to meet and work with different people. Music to me is most fun when shared with others.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How long have you been doing this. 10 years.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That i just run things through good gear to make it sound good. You have know what your looking for and how to get it to actually make it sound the way you want.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: If they will trust me.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Know why you're hiring me. Ask questions about my musical tastes to see if they gel with yours. Do you want your record to sound good or just satisfy something you are comfortable with.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Neumann U67, Marshall Time Modulator, EMT 140, Pultec EQP1, Fairchild

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I played in bands growing up and still do, after I was in a recording studio and was unhappy with the outcome I decided to take things in my own hands and slowly built my studio and got clients to record.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Psychedelic, retro futuristic, analog,

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Jeff Lynne, Dan Auerbach, Kevin Parker, I like the records they make.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Get the groove right and everything else will be illuminated.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Rock, Indie, Folk, Soul.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: TONE! My favourite thing about music production is crafting a new sound.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Excitement, a unique sound, mojo, accessibility, experience.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: How I like to start sessions is by getting a solid foundation down first. Usually the rhythm track. Drums and Bass recorded together and maybe a scratch guide guitar or vocal. Then I will work either myself or with a client overdubbing and bringing the song to life.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I converted an old horse barn into a two room recording studio with an echo chamber in the basement. The live room is 21x20x20 with large vaulted ceilings and big glass windows to let natural sunlight in as well as provide epic views of the canyon. I have been collecting gear for 12 years now and have many classic keyboards, amps, guitars, and effects. Everything is hooked up and ready to track within seconds. The control room is next to the live room and I have a ton of outboard gear. BAE 1073 pres, vintage tube pres, classic compressors, vintage fx units. I have a 24t track MCI Jh24 that I typically track on then dump into Pro Tools HD. I also have a 4 track Otari that I bounce to on the final mix down. I have a plethora of classic mics as well.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Jeff Lynne, Conny Plank, Todd Rundgren, Lee Scratch Perry, Joe Meek, Brian Eno, Brian Wilson, The Beatles,

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I track mix and produce records 99% of the time.
